twitter moms: the influential moms network

My son Alex is four and an only child. I'm often at a loss as to how to entertain him and am ALWAYS looking for great suggestions for inexpensive, interesting (for him and me), energy burning activities.

Send help! Thank you.

TJ is three, but he loves just spinning around in circles in the living room. ;-) He likes to play in on Mommy & Daddy's bed... we let him jump up and down. He tackles Tom and wrestles with him. He's not allowed to tackle me because I'm a wuss, but he likes to play hide and seek with me - either hiding under the covers or in the closet - and he gets a big kick out of it when I "look" for him in silly places. ("Is TJ in my sock drawer? No. Is he in the box of Kleenex? No...")

Playing catch with a stuffed animal is a new favorite pasttime of his. We do it up in his room where we're not going to break anything. He likes trying to see if he can throw it all the way up to the ceiling. If he throws it and it goes astray, he goes after it. Saves me some steps, and gets more of his energy out!

He also loves to read books. Depending on the book, you can add motions to it as you read. We have a puppy book that talks about how puppies like to play, and he likes to play tug of war with me (like the puppies do) and depict how puppies like to chase their tails. It's very cute.

There's always Play Doh, too. If you don't want to buy it, you can find recipes for it online. Making it together can be fun, too.

If he has a plastic desk or tabletop that needs cleaning, put some shaving cream on it and let him spread it around and draw pictures in it with his finger. It feels messy to him, but it really cleans things up as he plays.

I like that idea! Hunting treasure...see, I just need a little help from my friends! Thanks!

My son has always been into Star Wars & Indiana Jones so he always wanted to play with light sabers, and we would hide things for him in the back yard, then draw a map & have him pretend he was Indiana Jones & we would be his side kicks or the bad guys and try to stop him from finding the treasure. He used to get so worn out after treasure hunting that he would take a good nap. I love having a boy, you can get dirty with them and have lots of fun!

Building toys like Legos, Lincoln Logs. Mr. Potato Head too. My boys will build and build and build... I have to have a separate box to hold their creations of the day and they put the extra pieces away. Also Geo Trax - you build the tracks and the trains are remote controlled. Oh man, I even had to tear myself away from those!!!

Thanks Kimberley...yep we have multiple types of Legos, blocks, Lincoln Logs, etc. Have you ever tried Widgets? They are these cool 3-D squares/diamond shapes that you can create wild buildings and creatures with! Cheers. :)

other things I've found to keep my child busy: two hula hoops. I've got two, one bigger and one smaller for him. He's still trying to learn the whole hula hoop concept of making it go round, but the other day I was trying to teach him to 'jump rope' with it. He'll also place them on the floor and see if he can jump from one into the other. Or.... Nana and Pappaw bought him a fishing pole for Christmas. It came w/a plastic fish to tie onto the end and he'll go fishing in the hoop.

IKEA has inexpensive train tracks and we can spend hours just trying to come up w/different layouts. We bake a lot. Color pictures for the grandparents. Oh... we'll also turn on the radio, or ipod. He'll hear a song and I'll ask him to draw a picture about it. Sort of like a Pictionary/Win, Lose or Draw. His favorite so far is Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

One other thing, if it's in the budget and you've got the space for it... I was able to find a 7'x7' bounce house on clearance at KB Toys (w/an Entertain book coupon) was around $100 or so... and he'll spend 20-30 min in there about 3-4 days/wk. It really helps to have on rainy days or in the winter time.

My son will soon be 4 next month. He LOVES art projects. Loves to cut paper and glue stuff. He's really good at sports so we make up games that involve kicking or hitting a ball or whatever's close at hand.

We wrestle but not like he does w/ Daddy. We also screw around on the swings and pretend we're airplanes out of control.

Can't wait to pick him up from school now!

My 4 year old loves to ride his bike or ride his skateboard along the boardwalk. We go on crazy missions some days and by the time we get home he is ready to crash on the couch!
Swimming is another great way to burn energy.

If he is a crafty one, you can NEVER go wrong with a million coloring books with crayons and colored pencils. That's at least how I was when I was younger. There are recipes for home-made finger paints and edible playdoughs that you both could have fun making before he even got to play with it, so he would get even more fun out of using and playing with something that he got to create himself.

That is too cute! We're way into Star Wars here too. Haven't found Indy yet...but the day is near I'm sure.

My guys are into Star Wars/Indiana Jones!!! Today we captured the evil battle droids (dirty laundry) and jailed them (laundry baskets), then took them down to the reprogramming room (laundry room) where they were sorted (darks and light), then reprogrammed (washed & dried). After this ordeal, they became good droids, eligible to aid in tommorrow's battle against the dark side. Both boys each had 3 good droids (underwear, shorts & shirt) that aided them in today's battle against the wicked droid forces of the dark side. And of course Mommy was attacked by the droids while attempting to capture them in her bathroom. "AHHHHHH, the underwear, er, droid, is on my head!"

Thank you, I have to remember to do the "art thing" more often. :)
