We're about ready to head down the road for our second round with preschool services. (The last time, our son didn't qualify for any services, but that was before we had a dx.) For those of you whose children have IEPs in place, what are the most helpful services or accomodations for your child?
First of all, do you have an ARC? I don't know what it stands for but our chapter here is www.ddadvocacy.net. They provide free advice and will even accompany you to your IEP meeting if you need it.
It is also extremely important that you have both parents there (or if that isn't possible a grandparent or friend) for support.
Everyone should be working like a team.
At that age, our biggest accommodation was to have a place to wind down when my son was overwhelmed. Also, since my son was mainstreamed full time we added up to 30 minutes in the resource room - as needed (he didn't need it but it was still available).
They were also required to individually prepare him for any transitions since that was his toughest area.
Lastly, speech is VERY important because they can work on social skills. My son had the max amount of speech therapy allowed at that age. It has made a huge difference for him today and he is now 10. He speaks just fine, but they still work on social skills in there once a week. In the school setting they can evaluate and put these skills in to practice better than you can at home.
Hope this helps?
