twitter moms: the influential moms network

This is the place to talk a little bit more about our children. My boys are now 14 and 10, and Konal, the 14 year old, has multiple disabilities. We have in home support from Arizona's behavioral health system and daily challenges juggling diet considerations, behavior management, his other issues, and my own health issues. I find my self using social media, such as twitter, as an escape system when things get overwhelming. Today would be a good example of an overwhelming day. I had the strange idea that we could actually get their room clean today.

My name is Nancy. My son is Tyler. He is a 25 week preemie who is now 3. He has a few preemie related long term issues. He suffered from grade three and 4 IVH resulting in Hydrocephalus. He has a shunt that was revised just a month ago. He has ROP stage 3 rush disease which leaves him with Vision issues. he has mild CP and walks with a walker. He also is cute as could be. He goes to preschool where he is cognitively on target. He has speech delays that we are working on. I live in Arizona and am trying to maneuver my way in the DDD system and avoid using CRS!

My blog is about my family and life with a micro preemie and my other is my photos. I love taking photos..

My name is Bridget. Married SAHM to 4 kids
Lonette 21 just graduated from Grambling State University in May, going for her BA
Erica 20 a sophomore at Grambling State University her major is Crimminal Justice
Brianna 14 9th grader
And Eric here is his story
Eric was born August 18, 1995 the youngest of 4 children he has three othere sister’s Lonette 21, Erica 19 and Brianna 13. The delivery with Eric was normal except the several cases of false labor he weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces and made his television debuet that same day along with his sister Brianna Hubby and I

. While growing up he had multiple ear infections and was diagnosed with Asthma at the age of 9 months we almost lost him at that point.

We began to notice something was wrong when he spoke his first sentence at the age of one which was "Hey chuckle head" and from then on nothing more was said except for mommy and daddy, so in speaking to other people they just said that is normal for boys mature slower then girls and not to worry so we didnt.

On a normal visit to his see his physician Dr Myrah Kahn she began to notice things in Eric like his speech not talking in full sentences, or when he wanted something he would grab you by the finger and lead you to it and point or just grunt.

So she suggested we or when you would ask him a question he would just repeat it so we suggested we take him to have his hearing checked so off to Olive View Medical we went, the hearing test came out fine.

Where they gave a series of other test and thats when we were given the news that Eric had Autism and it felt like my world came crumbling down.

I mean all I felt was anger, frustration, sadness for about two weeks I was on a fog, but then I had to get it together so I could get

Eric the help he needed for we started to see how this was effecting him how he would become frustrated when you could not understand him so he would become angry and fight, his attention span was very short and he would cry for no reason.

But as time when by and he got the proper care from schools like Horaceman, Providencia and Miller and all the wonderful teachers and assistants that worked with him.

. Also the wonderful people from the Frank D Lanterman Center especially Darlene who came into our home and helped us with Eric with the toilet training it was a long process but we all got it done.

Angela how has come in and helped with behavioral issues when needed. In 2006 he was diagnosed with Absence seizures and now in 2008 they think he may have adhd we are having him tested in a few week for that.

It has been a never ending journey with Eric sometimes regression will set in or he will have meltdowns so bad that I just want to sit down and cry with him.

School has had its up and downs his last school he did so well he gave the graduation speech that you can find on my page here.

This year has not been that kind a few of the kids have not been that acceptable of Eric, he has had his arm broken, picked on things thrown at him all because he is different, and friendly kid and according to the school dont fit into the "normal range of a child with Autism" what ever that means. But he is not letting the fact that he is "Different change him" he is loved by so many people due to his charming personaliy thats why we call him our Prince lol.

Just last week he was asked by the Spanish teacher if she could have him in her 7th period class here he normally takes Piano, the reason there is a child in there that will not speak but will communicate with Eric in Spanish, and its funny for when Eric speaks in English he tends to stutter, but when speaking in Spanish it flows out smooth and he has no accent.

So Eric on his on accord agreeded to change his class so he can help his friend to learn to speak in English.

So yes Autism has his bad themes but at times Autism can bring out qualities in our kids we never knew they had.

Introducing myself...Kim from Mi. I have a 16 year old daughter with high functioning autism. Her name is Shannon. She loves Sonic the hedgehog and can draw the characters from the cartoon show very well. :) She taught herself by tracing images of them. She loves music and rocking, and enjoys the fan on most of the time. She is a big fan of Super Nanny.

We have had some tough times, but this year is so much better. I have never used meds, only natural choices. I have gained control through diet and supplements. Gluten was a real issue for a while, and is not and then, but use enzymes to help health the gut. MSG appears to be a problem more than anything now, and I avoid at all costs. We replace dairy when we can too, but enzymes seem to help with that as well. We use rice milk, soy seems it could be a trigger like dairy.

I have a 12 year old son who has many issue's with certain foods too, so these changes help him as well, including the enzymes.

He use to have allergy related asthma and eczema, and has outgrown most of it without meds, just change in diet. He is on allergy meds for fall because he missed a lot for school, and some of his allergies is due to environment. It's a common OTC med. and when we get it more under control, I will be looking for natural solutions, which we do some
use with allergy med. now.

Glad to have found the group!

Hi, I have a special needs daughter and two other young children. After a very bad Kindergarten experience, she is now thriving in a special class with a wonderful teacher. We're very blessed. Academic improvement was phenomenal, she's now ahead of her grade. It's amazing what the right environment (especially people) will do. Sometimes "full inclusion" and differentiation are not the right answer.

I'm Christina, and my son TJ is 3 years old. At his first preschool parent-teacher conference, we were urged to schedule an evaluation for him. After researching the concerns raised by the special ed teacher in his classroom, I realized they are looking into a diagnosis of Asperger's. He's in an intergrated classroom, where any kids with special needs can have their extra resource teachers come in and out of the classroom as needed, while staying with the rest of the class.

We'd suspected something like Asperger's for some time, and I just want to know how best to help him. There's always the possibility that he inherited my anxiety (I have GAD) to a major degree, but I've done quite a bit of reading up, and I don't doubt it's Asperger's.

Hi, all. SO thrilled to find this group. I recently started blogging about life with my five-year-old, Max, who has cerebral palsy, because I thought it would be a good outlet. Along the way, I've gotten sucked into dozens of other blogs and Twitter, and now my husband has a hard time tearing me away from my computer at night! I also have a three-year-old, Sabrina. We live in NJ. I work fulltime as a magazine editor. Shout out to MT, we have a little place in Wildwood, NJ, love the beach. In fact, one of the handful of words Max can say is "Beach house!"—where he would always rather be. Glad to meet all of you. You can see how cute Max is at the blog! (I'm shameless about how cute he is.) :)

Hi I'm Gina and I'm the mom to 2 special needs kids. Amelia has Mosaic Down syndrome and is 5. She's just started kindergarten and I'm having difficulty with getting her potty trained, attention to task and one-to-one counting. My little one, Zoe, is 3 and has sensory integration disorder. She was diagnosed PDD-NOS (still not sure what that means), and a possible autism diagnosis but it's still too early.

Started blogging while pregnant in '02, and once Amelia was born and diagnosed, blogging has been my life-line for the last 5+ years.
