If you were going to design a new piece of playground equipment that encouraged children to use their tactile, auditory, and visual senses, what would it look like and what would your child do with it? This is your opportunity to really impact playground design. There is a playground manufacturer that is going to make this—they want your ideas!!

So think beyond your normal thoughts of a playground with swings and things to climb on. With this new design, a child would go up to it and interact. Think about textures, sounds, materials, light, water, nature and more. Think about cognitive activities like they have on panels like tic, tac, toe or a finger maze—but make it more sophisticated. If you can’t think of anything in specific, share with me the types of activities your child enjoys using these senses.

All of your ideas will go directly into the hands of the playground designer (who has a child with autism). They will not be lost in any bureaucracy. So it is worth your time to give me your thoughts. I will share pictures of the completed design as soon as it is completed.

Thank you!

I would love to see the completed design.

I would love to see more cause and effect type play on equipment- maybe lights that turn on when you walk on different stones, or sound stones- when you walk across them you hear different sounds, tactile walls with finger mazes and various bumps and ridges for the kids to feel as they move across the equipment. Water running within a wall or dull lights that hang. I would also like to see more rubber mats or stepping stones where kids really have to balance to move across them. I would like to see more swings- a platform swing or bolster swing that allows for differentplanes of movement- a child can lie on their stomach and swing on the platform swing. trampoline area I can go on and on- being an Occupational therapist this is a dream jobto design a sensory play gym :0) Please let me know if I can help in any way
