Welcome to the place for Moms raising children with special needs. I am fairly hands off in running the group, but have been known to delete comments that are clearly promotional in nature. Enjoy the community.

Hello everyone! I am new to twittermoms and I actually seen the article in Redbook Mag. and it seemed to be an answer for me. I am a 31 year old single mother from Western Ky and a full time student. I have a daughter who is 12 years old from my first marriage (widowed) and an 8 year old son from my second marriage (divorce). My son is ADHD and Bipolar and has bad anxiety and others that are usually associated with adult bipolar. My daughter has been diagnosed recently with Mood disorder (although I am not sure about that one). I hope to get to know you all here, it gets a little lonely when you are alone. Thanks!

Hi Angela,

My son is now 8 but he had oral apraxia when he was young. He went to a speech therapy school near here from the age of 3 till he was 5. I had him in speech therapy from the age of 2 because i could tell there was something wrong. After a year he had an analysis done by the government speech therapist (a year on the waiting list). She discovered the apraxia and oral motor disfunction. We started searching for a new private therapist and found a wonderful who changed Grants life.
It is a struggle - especially the communication. We, as a family, learned sign language, beginning when he was about 2 1/2 so that he could communicate with us. It was one of the best things we could have done because it enabled a lot of the frustration to go away for him.

He is better now and speaks fine. The struggle was long but had a happy ending. He has some other issues - we can chat about later.

Take care,

Jane

Hi I'm mom to 3 kids ... our middle son is 5 1/2 years old and has Down syndrome and was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. We are adjusting to cooking gluten free which is a bit of a challenge! I am a huge advocate for "People First Language" and I have to admit the title of this group made me cringe ... using People First Language the group name would be "Moms of Kids with Special Needs" :)

Have any of you heard of this theory?

Hello everyone!

I have to admit, I'm new to technology, scared, but willing and wanting to learn. I love to read, watch movies (2 hour escape), match my undies to my outfit, bit OCD about organizing closets...okay the whole house, travel, playing volleyball, and getting massages. How often do I get to do those things? More now that I've changed my focus...but that is causing issues with others who were so used to me doing everything for them (hubby, other family, friends)

I have 2 special needs children : son with Asperger's and daughter with Osteogenesis Imperfecta type III (severe brittle bones). Never a dull moment in my house :) Since I've changed my life, their lives have turned for the better as well. Funny how that works.

I work full time for a bowling pro shop distributor and am writing a book for SPED moms called "Martyrdom Sucks: A Survival Guide for Moms of Special Needs Kids". It's about being a woman first, mom second....which is double hard to do when your kids have double the needs. I have an agent and am shopping for a publisher. If any of you would like to contribute your thoughts and advice to other moms, I'll gladly add it in!! By no means do I think I've got a corner market on knowledge. I fully believe in lifting the whole community to prosper.

I look forward to exchanging loves, laughs, and irks with everyone!

I asked families to send Valentines to loved ones with autism. They did! Here are nearly fifty wonderful appreciations to enjoy, share, or add to: http://autism.about.com/b/2009/02/14/valentines-galore-for-loved-ones-with-autism.htm.
