Are you and your teen stressed about college?

  • Rating: 0 after 1 vote
If you're like me, the whole college process was one of the biggest items of stress in our household: deciding where to go; could we afford it; finding time for the tests, essays, and college tours; and hoping beyond hope that there was some scholarship out there that would help ease the financial burden.

If you have a college-bound teen, what is your biggest stress factor?

I'm concerned about making sure he takes the classes he needs in high school so he'll have a better chance getting into the college of his choice.

Sara,
You're right to be concerned. Course choices are extremely important. Colleges like students who take on challenging classes: AP, Honors, math, science. You might want to check out my blog related to this subject:

What grade is your son in?

He's just in 9th grade right now, so he has time, but I want to be able to guide him for next year and the future.

Sara,
That's great! You are starting early. Schedule a meeting with his guidance counselor and he/she will help you make a plan for the next four years. Make sure he is with you though and encourage him to participate in the meeting as well. If he already has some college choices in mind, the counselor should know what courses those colleges require. Having a relationship with the guidance counselor is important because when he's a senior, he will most likely need to use them as a reference. Plus, so many scholarship opportunities come across their desks as well.

I went to a college prep seminar for both parents and students last year. It was put on by Johns Hopkins University. It was WONDERFUL. Please visit their website and see if one is coming to your area soon. Well worth both the time and money. I "drug" my daughter with me. She complained all the way up but it was all she could talk about for a few days afterward.

Great advice Kathleen. It's important to take advantage of every opportunity that is available and absolutely take your kids with you. Those sessions are so helpful for both parent and student.
