Moms Raising Kids With Conscience

This is a group for moms who want to raise GIVING kids. We want to inspire our children to think outside themselves: give to their communities, the planet, and others.

How do we teach our children that giving of themselves feels good, benefits everyone and will lead to an appreciative and happier life?

Please tell us your stories in this space. When did your child generously give to others, or behave selfishly, and how did you handle it? How did you feel. We think that there are so many everyday opportunities for our kids to learn about the joy of giving to others...

Genell-
What aboutif your son brought a small treat or plant to school to give to the boy causing trouble. This might teach him kindness and open him up to options around behavior. Each child has the ability to be kind and give to others. What about inviting him over and showing him generosity to inspire him. The two boys obviously like each other but maybe they can be steered in another direction and do good together. What if the two boys founded a club. The Giving Club to teach kids how to help others? Would that work?

I completely agree. It is about modeling. They copy us and when we give to others, respect others and respect ourselves they will follow this way of being in the world. Carline, an you give us examples of things you do to make this happen....

Hello all! Glad to be here. This is a topic dear to my heart. The best way to teach our children is to lead by example. Young children imitate influential people in their lives. So parents and teachers play a big role in this. So, the things to think about is how can we, as parents, help others, do it and take the kids along for the ride (involved). The earlier age they start to see and experience this, the longer it will last with them.

Question? How do you teach children to inspire those that are use to getting into trouble, to choose a different path? and not involve themself in the negative choices? My boy CAN behave well, but a particular boy in his class is already labeled a problem child and he follows his lead and then they are in the "Opportunity" room as they call it now. We talk and talk about frienship boundries, and good decisions when playing, and respect of others in the classroom. So, if anyone has any helpful suggestions to help sway his frienship tactics, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Heather-
We are thrilled to have you here. What are some of the ways you bring out that genuinely giving nature in your daughter. We are looking for the hands-on, tangible ways to have an impact on our kids. There are truly opportunities every day...there are so many ways to teach compassion....give us some ideas....

Even though my daughter is only 2, I want to raise her to be kind and helpful to others. My desire is for her to understand that there are others who are much less fortunate than she is and ways she can help. She's a very loving child and I want to let that loving soul grow into a compassionate adult. Love this group and hope to gain some great ideas for the future!

I find it so amazing that each day there is an opportunity to offer our children something that will encourage them to think outside themselves and be thoughtful about the world. Sometimes I look at my 7 year old boy and 4 year old daughter and think: All this activity, discussion and questioning...what are the moments that will stick, inspire, take hold? I also think: Are my words of encouragement helping them or hindering them? There is no recipe to raising thoughtful kids!!! I wish that there was one.
