Moms Raising Kids With Conscience

This is a group for moms who want to raise GIVING kids. We want to inspire our children to think outside themselves: give to their communities, the planet, and others.

How do we teach our children that giving of themselves feels good, benefits everyone and will lead to an appreciative and happier life?

Please tell us your stories in this space. When did your child generously give to others, or behave selfishly, and how did you handle it? How did you feel. We think that there are so many everyday opportunities for our kids to learn about the joy of giving to others...

Just a suggestion on where to buy used books cheap. you may want to try abebooks.com
It is a website of independent booksellers across the United States and you can often times find books for as little as 99 cents and I have often even been able to find out of print books that I was looking for. It is truly a great place for books, in my opinion. I was turned on to it by another grad student and am so grateful for the tip. I can't tell you how many books I have bought there or how much money it has saved me.

In response to the suggested book, Children Learn What They Live, I wanted to also share a wonderful book I discovered at my yoga teacher's home: Choosing Civility by P.M. Forni. While it is geared for adults, it is something I feel everyone should read (and of course, modeling to children is the suggestion here). Dr. Forni also is the head of The Civility Project at the Johns Hopkins University.

There's a free link to read it on Google Books: http://is.gd/3S7E or buy it on Amazon for about $10: http://is.gd/3S7Q I love this book and was able to buy a used copy on ebay.

This is such a worthwhile opportunity to teach, teach, teach our kids.

I am soooo excited to be in this group. What a great idea! I started a Cultural Awareness Program at my kid's school. We implemented a service component to the program, so the elementary-school-aged children could see that it is not enough to gain awareness for another culture. The way to truly love those around you, regardless of their differences and backgrounds, is to reach out, give back, and serve them.

I am excited to learn in what other ways moms have helped teach their kids to give back.

There is a great book: Children Learn What They Live: Parenting To Inspire Values. It is true that if you are sharing with others as an adult, over time and with patience, you will see these behaviors in your kids. All of us moms have had the experience of hearing our kids say something and thinking: 'That is me'...she/he got that from me. So it follows, and we have experienced this: If you model sharing with others, they will share too...

Luckily even though he is only 15 months old our son has generally been very good about sharing his toys even when he was only 4 or 5 months old and his cousin wanted the toy he was playing with he would just let he play with it, granted sometimes he does get territorial over toys but we try to help him see that sharing works both ways. He has also been very good about passing on his old toys when he no longer needs them, yes he already passes his toys along. I figure it is never to early to instill good values.

One way I have instilled a "Great" thing in my kids about giving is using the website www.freecycle.org Teaches about giving away things they don't need (which I have them do first, before receiving), and then when they have given then they can ask for something they would like to have in return. It is a FREE give away sight, NO money exchanged. Just post to give or receive and coordinate with the people interested in picking it up. Happy Freecycling everyone!

This group has interest from moms looking for moments of reflection with our kids. Indulging our children in a lovely trip to the ice cream shoppe or saying "No honey, we cannot buy a Wii system..." are moments for reflection and appreciation. Kids are deep. They crave the opportunity to think about issues and different ways of looking at a situation.

We want to invite the members of this group to talk about the ways they inspire their children to become thoughtful, caring, reflective, appreciative. We are craving your stories.........

Mother of all Mavens, obviously we love you and want to parade you around Chucky Cheese (is that how you spell it?) on our shoulders!!! You are a mother who gets it and like us was HAD ENOUGH with all the consumption around bday parties. I had an ECHOage party for my daughter yesterday and guess what, the party happens an NOBODY MISSES THE HEAP OF GIFTS, not even my 4 year old daughter who, like other kids, loves stuff.

I am a huge fan - in theory and for real! I've been to the parties, have thrown a party, and am about to throw another one. The question isn't "why", but "why not?!" How many times can you clear out your basement? How many crappy presents can your kids open and then toss aside? This is the perfect solution. Makes everybody happy - the birthday boy/girl with the really awesome gift, the parents who teach their kids about giving, the charities on the receiving end, and of course the parents of the invited kids. Who wants to shop for a generic gift for some child you couldn't i.d. in a lineup when you barely have time to buy groceries? Besides, wouldn't you rather buy shoes?! Once you EchoAge, there's no going back.
