Alyssa, congrats on the offer! If you don't know where to turn, maybe it's time to look for an agent? You don't have to accept or reject that offer immediately. Peruse the Author's Guild website. Google "contract negotiation tips for writers" and see what you can find. Also check out Preditors and Editors to make sure your publishing house has a "clean" record there. Good luck! What an exciting time for you.

I am just now beginning the process of writing a book. I have written articles and devotionals for 2 years now. I write Christian non-fiction.
I just got an offer from a publisher, but am hesitant because I dont' want to be taken advantage of, mainly because i don't know the ins and outs of publishing. Would love advice.

I have just written my first book. It is published with North Light Publishing company and will be in the stores in Dec 08. The title is STRANDS: Creating Unexpected Fabrics and Fashionable Projects.

I've self-published six books with Lulu -- a series of five fantasy novels and a short-story collection -- and I think they're one of the best resources for self-publishing out there. My problem is in promotions; I have absolutely zero budget for advertising! I have my books on Amazon and my Shopit store, but I wish I could be doing more.

Good points Kidlit Kim. Harold Underdown (He of Harold and the Purple Crayon fame) has a fantastic website full of great articles and resources and an ENTIRE section devoted to Ego/Vanity Presses. Go here: http://www.underdown.org/self-publishing.htm

Very enlightening.

Hey there, everyone--great to (virtually) meet all of you! My name is Denene Millner, and I've the author of 16 books--adult fiction and non-fiction, young adult, and two children's picture books. I've been writing since the 9th grade, and got my first check for it in my senior year in high school. Seemed like so much cash, then! Does anyone here write outside of books?

I noticed several of you are taking the self-publishing route. I think that's great if the book is well-written, has been edited, has great cover art. And, if you have a platform and the desire/ability to self promote. Good luck to you!

I thought I'd also add a link as a word of warning or caution. Not all indie prints/self publishing/vanity press companies are created equal. There's a site you can use as one of many ways to check out a publisher/agent/editor. http://anotherealm.com/prededitors/pubwarn.htm If your publisher is on this, RUN!

I'm not saying all self-publishing is bad. There are some excellent books out there. But, just be careful. A traditional agent, editor or publisher will not ask you for money. Ever. Know what you're doing so you don't get scammed!

Hello Ladies! I have two books out... one I wrote on my own(Your Big Sister's Guide to Surviving College) and one I co-wrote (A Book Is Born) Both were a labor of love. I have a few manuscripts in the works...it's basically a race to see which one gets completed first...I write on them whenever the mood...or muse hits me.
