Thank you Sharon, you have been very helpful to me and Erin! I appreciate you very much. Thanks again!

Thanks Charlotte, this does help. I am finding so many of the proposals are more about how you are already known (via the web or speaking engagements, etc.) that the book itself is almost secondary. This is a full time job in itself! I am going to try your tip of checking on similar authors for agents. Thanks again!

Hi Charlotte, in the UK we have literary directories, but I found the best way of looking for the right kind of agent was to research authors who write on similar subjects, and find out who represents them. You can also call the publishers themselves and ask for advice; they're busy people, but usually helpful. Good luck!

Hi Erin, from my own experience you need an agent to have any chance of being taken seriously by publishers. I've been told (in the UK) that so many people are now writing books, both fiction and non fiction, that no publisher would waste his/her time reading a manuscript unless it came from a trusted source. If you're a first time writer, the publisher can only trust your agent. Does this help?

I'm with Charlotte, book is pretty much done but I don't know where to go next. I submitted to one publisher so far and have also been told that an agent is helpful. Any suggestions on how to start?

Can someone tell me where a good place to look for a agent is? I have finished one of two books of a sci fi and have learned enough through friends that an agent is very useful to a writer, but I don't know where to start. I google them all the time, but its hard to determine which one is best for me. Do I need to choose one that is local, does that matter? I just don't know!

Hi,
I am new to Twitter and I am working on a book titled Fertility Follies, Adventures in Hormones & Hot Flashes. www.fertilityfollies.com
Would love any feedback on the site and advice on how to get an agent. I am about a third of the way finished with my book and am in the "what next" stage. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi, I look forward to joining the group and learning more about taking the first step to penning a book. I know there has to be a first step...lol
