twitter moms: the influential moms network

Ok Moms. I just looked at airfare to go back East to see my brother in New York. Hotels are affordable but the airfare for all 6 of us is out of the question...any great ideas on what to do during summer vacation when you can't afford to go anywhere?

we take vacations nearer us so that we can drive (within a 6-8 hour drive). i guess it depends on where in the country you live, but that will get us anywhere on the california coast and for a little bit farther drive we can get to utah, oregon, idaho, or arizona. we also look for deals on hotels, as we need a suite or two hotel rooms. priceline, travelocity, and vacation rentals by owner are all great places to find deals--and don't forget craigslist.com. many vacation home owners list their properties there.

this summer, as we have a new baby coming, we don't have a vacation planned until september, and then we are going to lake tahoe with some family, which is within a couple of hours from us. my hubby will probably take the kids camping once or twice before then, but i am not committing to anything!

How does the camping work? I've never been a camper, but I think it is something I need to build into our family plans. Do you have an RV, is it tent camping? Do you stay at those KOA grounds? Is it fun? I keep thinking with a one year old, it sounds like torture.

We are also not going anywhere this summer. I'm thinking on using the time to get them on track with a system of chores and responsabilities... I know, it sounds so boring, but we really need that right now. Any book suggetions on the topics? My 5 kids are from 17 to 4 years old. Also I have some plans on starting a project of building a house tree with my boys. I hope we can get it done. In the picture I uploaded you can see me and my 5 kids on mother's day :)
