Welcome!

Raising a Reader is the place to be if you'd like to discuss kids' books, authors, library programs, stories, and strategies for getting kids reading. I hope you'll take a moment to introduce yourself, and that you'll jump right in and join our discussions. Thanks for stopping by! Don't forget to swing into the Introductions thread and let us 'meet' you.

We have lots of cool discussions going on right now (17 at last count!)-great links to share, favorite books and a survey about how much you read at your house. I hope that you'll take a look and jump into the ones that you find interesting. You can find them by clicking the 'view all' button at the bottom of the Discussions section. You're also welcome to start your own. I've even got a thread for you to pass on links to your reading-related blog postings! Please share with us and get a backlink on the way!

This just sounds like I'm brag-a-docious but my 13 year old loves to read and write. He wants to follow in my footsteps and be an author (A honor he wants to follow me) He's been working on a couple of books for two years. Futuristic and historical it's amazing. That's a long time but he's coming into his own, I'm very proud of him.

Hey guys - there is a free shipping offer at Barefoot Books right now through 9/30 for orders over $35. It's a great time to stock up on new material (and birthday gifts)! Happy Reading!

Hi there! I joined awhile back and have been absent for quite some time. There are some really great posts in this group and I'm looking forward to participating!

I'm the mother of a toddler with one on the way, and I also work part-time as a children's librarian. I blog about all sorts of things, but mostly motherhood, books, and crafts.

Story extenders are a great way to foster a love of reading. I made flannel pieces of some of my son's favorite stories so that he could act out and retell them. Here's an example:

I am so excited. The Truth (I'm a girl, I'm smart and I know everything), my book, is now an Amazon Best Seller in three categories: Being a Teen, Children's Books 9-12, and Children's Literature. Since my mission is to bring this book to kids and their parents so that girls will grow up strong and happy, the more exposure it gets, the more kids and parents will read it. I'm finishing the second book now in which the girl gets a year older and has other problems and successes to deal with.

What a wonderful group! I think the best ways to raise readers is to read to your children and keep it fun - and let them see you reading!
