twitter moms: the influential moms network

The husband & I went wine tasting many years ago pre-children. At one of the wineries we sampled a Port. We were relatively sure that the man that was pouring for us was the winery owner since it was a very small winery and every time he poured some for us, he poured some for himself! But what I remember most was, after we'd sampled all the other wines, he gave us each a piece of dark chocolate (like Dove), told us to let it melt on our tongues, and then drink some of the Port. It was AMAZINGLY delicious.
Give it a try sometime. Even with regular Reds this is quite tasty. As some of the moms discovered at TMWC event on Friday!

I haven't had it, but I'm definitely open to giving it a try. Any recommendations?

I just picked up a Pocas Special Reserve Tawny Porto. It's from Portugal. I haven't opened it yet, but I'm dying to. I think I'll probably wait until Thanksgiving when there will be more family over to share.

I would just suggest (if you aren't near any wineries) to check out a local wine store & see what looks / sounds good to you. Just like with regular wine there will be some you like & some you don't. Or you may not like it at all.

But it's worth a try! Have fun!

A GOOD Vintage Port can be an excellent finish after a fine dinner --or just to sip on a chilly night .

Messina Hof here in Texas has some delicious port. They've won many ribbons for their port. I highly recommend it, especially with chocolate.

Yes, yes, yes, I love port. I like it much better than a dessert wine.

I love port! We usually buy a couple of bottles a year and I'll have a small glass in the evening, after dinner. There are so many different types of port that we've tried over the years. One of my favorites was a cabernet port (wish I could remember what winery).

I have a tendency to drink ports more in the winter. There's just something about sipping a port in front of a fire, watching a good movie.

That sounds fantastic. A nice blazing fire with a glass of port and a good movie. Obviously after the kids are in bed!! Or there'd be no peace, right?!

Thanks for sharing!

I usually like Port but just tried one in SB this past weekend and it was far too intense!!!! However, they suggested cooking with it or using it to make jam?

Oh, I bet cooking with it would be delicious. And a jam sounds yummy!

Port is an excellent after dinner wine or relaxing by the fire on a cold winter night wine. I have found many different kinds of port on the market , some good, some not so good. For those of you on a budget, may I suggest Kings Port. It comes out of Kings winery and can be found in most liquor stores in the US. It doesn't have the vinegar after taste that most of the cheaper wines do. It has a very pleasant semi sweetness to it but not a sugary sweet taste. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried Port wine yet but, would like to do so. The cost is well worth the purchase.

I love port. I have actually been to the Museum of Port in Lisbon. If you're even there, it's worth a stop. We drink it frequently after dinner with cheese and pears, preferably a good Stilton bleu cheese. Do get some advice though before you buy some because there are some that are under $20 that are actually good. Except that we have some very old ones in our wine fridge we're saving for some occasion that has yet to be identified!
