Kelli,

Thank you so much for the encouragement. I always felt that I had some benefits to offer with the skills I have acquired over the years. I even have a unique advantage in bookkeeping, I have worked both commercial business and non-profit so I know both sides of the spectrum. I guess I just don't know how to go about getting clients. Besides doing billing for my friend who ran a service business for a while, I have not done any VA work.

Let me know if you are interested in talking to me about your financial needs. Even if we don't work together, I may be able to help you decide what services you need.

Thanks for your encouragement!

Rebecca ~

Your bookkeeping skill set is HUGE, and you should definitely leverage that as you establish yourself as a new VA. In fact, all of your previous career roles make a fabulous blend. As someone who will soon be shopping for a VA, I can tell you that the #1 thing I need help with is a structured VA who will keep my financial life in order.

Lana,
As someone with PA, Fibro, and Crohns I know what it is like to not function in the morning. There are days my feet are so bad it is sometimes a chore just to get from the bed to the bathroom. BUT!!! I have found working from home is great because I can work on the schedule that works for me and I have had a few jobs that I could even say this is not a good day for me I will be online tomorrow.

As someone who suffers from chronic pain myself, I can relate. With your skills you most certainly can work from home as a Virtual Assistant, no doubt in my mind.

Multitasking is VERY important to a job these days :) So yes, the things you can do all at once ARE important. They prove that you can do many things at once, and do them well . :)

thanks Stephanie (and to all) for your ideas. It feel almost scary to re-enter the workplace again because of feeling uncertain ...you know, like will my ability to nurse an infant, vacuum and walk be important at a job? lol But seriously I will use the ideas and thanks again.

I am a legal assistant and have been for the last nine years. I have an Assoc. in Paralegal Studies and Bachloer's in Buss. Admin, I would love to use my skils and work from home. I have RA and Fibromyalgia and the morning routine is getting harder and harder for me.

Hi Ptown -
I have hired people via elance, but so far I've never tried getting a job via elance but I do know people that it works for very well. There are many ways that you can find work, as you learned sometimes via a friend, other-times via a network of some sort.
There are even VAs who hire VAs believe it or not. :) Welcome!

Hi Beth -
You could update your skills if you want by taking a night class from home, or doing volunteer work. There are a lot of organisations who need volunteers, who will give you a nice reference when you start trying to get jobs.

What I would do is write down a list of what your current skills are, decide whether or not you need to update them, then seek out a way to do that. Via classes, reading, self study, or volunteering or a combination.

In the meantime be your own first client.

Create a web page for yourself, learn Internet marketing and do those things for yourself. Before you know it, you'll be hired and working as a VA.

I've been out of the real work world for almost 8 yrs since having my children but prior to I've done Admin, secretarial, receptionist, Paralegal & corp, travel.......do I need to catch up just to catch up?? The work world seems so scary to me after so long being "gone".
