Do you have an unhealthy relationship with money? Part 2: Money and your marriage

In the last post, we talked about your personal relationship with money. In this post, I want to talk about how unhealthy relationships with money can affect your marriage.

Coincidentally, on the same day as my last post, KATU's AM Northwest featured Spencer Sherman, author of The Cure for Money Madness. He discussed a lot of the things I discussed in the last post, but brought out some newpoints on commonly held beliefs that I hadn't thought of, such as, "I am my net worth," "I am nothing if I… Continue

Do you have an unhealthy relationship with money? Part 1 - Healing your relationship with money.

I have realized in the past year or so that a lot of people have an unhealthy relationship with money (myself included). I have actively tried to "heal" my relationship with money, which may sound kind of woo-woo, but I've found that it has really improved my life a lot.

Tip of the week: Have you overlooked a small but crucial detail?

Have you double-checked whether your beneficiary designations on all of your accounts are up-to-date? This is a very common mistake that people make. My friend, a financial planner, recently told me a story about a client who just passed away, but hadn't updated any of his beneficiary designations. The listed beneficiary was an ex-girlfriend (from like, 4 girlfriends ago!) and his wife ended up being screwed. My friend said that he sees this a lot with old 401(K) accounts.

So, my tip of the wee… Continue

Ongoing credit card company issues

It appears that credit card companies are still screwing with their customers. Raising rates and cancelling cards are becoming increasingly common. According to CNN Money Expert Clark Howard:

"The issuing banks are raising interest rates by 20 percent or more -- even if the individual has good credit, has never been late on a payment or hasn't even had any change in their credit standing.

"This is happening across all income levels. It's even affecting successful business owners and moderate t… Continue
