Hi Carla!! Nice to *meet* you! My books series is on healthy eating for children. The third one is due out in March. I get to see the artwork this weekend! Finally!!! The first book is "How I Eat Without Wheat" (it's feeling good about eating gluten free), the second book is "Nature's Candy" and it's about eating fruit for snacks. The third book is about eating vegetables to grow big and strong. The second and third books are vegan. :-)
You can get them on Amazon.com or BN.com. I write more about them on my author site www.karenfine.com.
I have tons of thoughts/suggestions on self-publishing. I actually spent a year going through the standard publishing process and collected a lot of really nice rejection letters. Apparently because my picture books RHYME, it's harder to sell them in other countries. Here are my thoughts on self-publishing:
Self-publish if:
1. You're in a hurry to get to market. It can take more than a year to get your book out once it's been picked up.
2. If you want to retain rights to all of your work.
3. If you have a niche.
I'm in the process of getting a gluten free menu book published and am working on getting an agent. From what I understand, the real key to getting published is not so much the content, as it is the marketability of your book. I could write a dissertation on what I've learned. :-) If you can establish a platform, get a market base and be able to convince a publisher that your book will SELL through your established platform, it will be easier to get a publisher to sign you. That being said, it's important to be prepared for much rejection before acceptance. I hope that helps your friend some. Feel free to ask any questions!
