CPA ads are cost per action. You will find a variety of companies using them. You place the CPA ad on your site, someone clicks through, you make money. Very similar to adsense, but you earn a lot more money.

Carmen,
That helps alot. Do they pay you per click, per month? How does that work? My other question is what do you mean by really high traffic. I get a lot, but of course it's all relative. Thank you again. I'm going to check out your site right...
Not sure if this is what you are looking for - but you can join CPA/affiliate type sites. Some of the common ones include commission junction, neverblue. Commission junction is easy to join. Then get ads from companies that approve you and place o...

Social media sites like Digg, Reddit and StumbleUpon can bring a lot of traffic to your blog, but usually votes are needed to make a story popular. If you participate in social media sites that rely on voting and sharing stories join our group.

A hook for news people is the new key point or update that hooks you in -- grabs you and makes you say "oh that's new" ...makes them consider putting it in a newscast or in a newspaper.
ie: every day you hear about how Madoff took billions of dollars from people, but one day the "hook" was the list that was made public, another day the "hook" may have been other evidence revealed, or a key interview.
For you the "hook" could be the week of the Super Bowl, your menu plan includes a cool recipe and suggestions on what you can make. Valentine's day is another biggie. A news release that says something like "Staying in for Valentine's Day: The Three Must-Have Items in Your Kitchen" (or something like that). With cooking (I think) you need to plan according to events.
Easter, Graduation, Father's Day would be good events to key into.

Again -- if there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.
About your wanting to get press for your business....How often have your news releases gone out (oversaturated?), what kind of hooks are you putting with them? Also what kind of news are trying to get on (a hard news tv station may not profile your company because it's not "hard" enough).
Can you appeal to these companies as an expert of sorts if they do stories on nutrition or the economy? Can they save money using your product?
Also check out HARO (help a reporter out) it is free to sign up for people like you and I. Basically it pairs up news media with us regular shmoes who know a thing or two. Basically the reporter needs 'victims', 'experts' for a story, and we want the press -- win/win. Three times a day they send out an email with requests in different categories, if you fit in you contact the "contact" on the email.
Good luck
