I'm a middle-class white mother whose kids went to one of the most diverse high schools in the country. I was so impressed with the academic and social enrichment of the school that I became a national advocate for diverse schools -- as an author and speaker

Just came back from an amazing second visit to the township of Nomathamsanqa in South Africa. While my husband worked with the teachers on strategies for teaching English (a second or third language there), I worked with the families on connecting them closer to the elementary school where we were volunteering.
