Square foot gardening works great! Even if your not short on space it's great for getting more out of each area. Saves a lot of work.

Hi, hope you are doing well. We are getting ready for starting formally the youngest two in home education. Guess it must be getting cooler there by now.

Oh, that makes sense! ('crown')

I know something of the legal battle over raw milk. My friend, Mark McAfee, of Organic Pastures was up there recently to be with Michael Schmidt as a friend and advisor. I understand that the 'big boys' have more sway than the citizens' rights and what the people truly want/need. Very sad times.

Were you aware of the Raw Milk Symposium just held in Toronto?

Glad you'll get goats again. I wouldn't be ready for a lot of land at this point, but would like enough for a few goats. My daughter really is wanting raw milk there. I know some are going underground to get it, but don't have any contacts.

I think the program she'd be with is specifically for immigrants that were farmers in their former country and people switching to a career as farmers. You have me curious to know more about that, as far as "her" program.

So, you'd just plant crops that work well in a clay soil? Pardon my abject ignorance on this!
I actually have a lot of interest, just not much knowledge nor experience yet.

How old is your oldest and your youngest? My oldest (my son) is 35 and my youngest 15 1/2. I have a grandson, 12 and a granddaughter, 10, haven't been able to visit them since they moved onto their (small) farm in the Grass Valley area.

Blessings!

What is crown land? (I need educating, you can tell!) What kind of clay? Anything usable?

How did you find that property? My daughter may be working with a project that helps farmers get started, should know soon whether or not she'll be working with them as administrator.

My son wants to start raising poultry and is thinking of starting a rest home on a farm, for the elderly to be in a healthy environment and as involved as possible. Real food, including raw milk, should do wonders for them. He worked on farm one summer break during college and truly enjoyed it.

Goodness, did I ask you enough questions???

Blessings!

What do you do with a farm of bush and wetland?

I know about the fancier houses raising the prices. Found a perfect-for-us 4/5 acre lot with wonderful orchard and garden beds but the house was way over-the-top. Tried to explain to the realtor that I would prefer a good garden and small livestock set-up with a 'lesser' house.

So, is there a house on the property you are buying? And isn't this pretty late for you? :)

Blessings...

What would an average farm size be? For California, that would be a steal, for a couple of acres :)

I be too warm-blooded, per'aps! Wood is plentiful, I take it? We've not burned any in our fireplace for about 3 years. Use the fake logs and gas when we need it, which is not often. I think about 3 times this winter, so far.

Is there already a house on your property up north?

Blessings...

I know vaguely that Walkerton is in the Toronto area, but have no idea how close. 10 hrs north! Sounds cold :) Prices aren't dropping like they are here? Hard to believe how much.

You're welcome :) My daughter is currently in Georgetown but planning a move in the near future, I think to somewhere in that vicinity.

Are you in a rural area or doing an urban homesteading?

Blessings!

Homestead Series Making Strawberry Jam

We are starting our summer canning with strawberry jam.
Normally I use low/no sugar pectin and only add a cup or two of sugar in my recipe. However I’m out of that so I’m using up some regular pectin. This uses more sugar then I like, but considering how small of a serving you use it’s not to bad.

Basic Strawberry Jam Recipe
2 quarts strawberries
2 TBS lemon juice
7 cups sugar
1 packet powdered pectin

Mash berries and add lemon juice and pectin.
Bring to a boil and add sugar.
Boil for 1 minute… Continue
