Is Asperger’s Going Away?

The title of this post may be a little misleading…what I am specifically posing here is if the word “Asperger’s” is going away…because according to the New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/03/health/03asperger.html?_r=1), it looks like this may just be the case.

Apparently experts who are revising psychiatry’s diagnostic manual want to eliminate “Asperger’s” from the new edition, due out in 2012. Instead of ha… Continue

A Teacher’s Hero

Talk about heroes…what’s more heroic than saving someone’s life. Especially when you’re only 10. That’s exactly what Kyle Forbes did – he saved his teacher’s life. Sheri Lowe, Kyle’s elementary school teacher, was chocking on an apple when Kyle, who has autism, saved her life by performing the Heimlich maneuver on her.

His actions have had a profound impact on the way he is regarded by the other students. Kyle said (hContinue

Stories of Hope and Inspiration

Those that visit Kyle’s Treehouse often are no strangers to www.Autism151.com, which we created to bring together stories of hope from the autism community. Our goal was to gather 151 stories…and I am very, VERY excited to report that we’ve not only reached, but have surpassed that goal! So thank you a million to all those that have contributed their videos or photos to Autism151 – they are all amazing and touching. You really have to see them for yourself.

But we don’t want to stop there – we… Continue

Share your story of autism.....

Autism151!

It’s a fact: 1 out of every 150 children is being diagnosed with autism. It’s a staggering percentage – one that may only continue to grow – but if you are someone whose life has been touched by autism, it’s a percentage that can be a true reminder that you are not alone.

Yes, having autism, or caring for someone with autism, can be difficult, upsetting and frustrating. It’s also at these tough times that we want to find answers, or look to someone or something to blame. I totally… Continue

Thanks for the note, Jenifer, and I agree - who knew that we'd be sharing the computer with our kids, creating blogs, websites, social networks? I never would have thought it possible, a few years ago...

I love your site, Kyle's Treehouse - what a wonderful resource for families, caregivers, etc. I'm on hiatus from a nonprofit org. for those with autism, etc., and manage a blog for them, but when I get back on board, I'll add your site to a new blog we're working on. You're doing wonderful work - and your latest blog entry was thought-provoking & insightful!

Take care,
Maureen.
