I use Lijit and like it fairly well. It works better than WP's internal search engine. I like that Lijit sends me weekly stats on my searches.
I think the best way to start is by writing and reading, a lot. Figure out what your blog is about and start sharing your wisdom. Spend the rest of your time reading and commenting on other blogs in your niche.

Simple Scrapper is a great first stop for getting your feet wet with digital scrapbooking.
I use Photoshop Elements because 1.) its inexpensive software and 2.) it can get you pretty darn close to the look of paper, without all the fuss.
