Hi Sally - yes hummous is a great option, my kids love it w/ everything.
You can make it or buy it prepared, the proper spelling is hummous.

I would try humus: it has a similar texture to peanut butter and can be used in sandwiches with a variety of vegetables, particularly kid friendly cucumbers. Also apple butter or cream cheese with squished berries are great alternatives.
