I don't recall, do you have a copy of Nourishing Traditions?
Just made up a Mango Chutney, should be ready to refrigerate by Wed evening. I find they taste best after at least a few more days in the fridge. Next, Pickled Salmon. And Sweet Potato Cookies.
And NOW, expecting the plumber any minute, to fix a very drippy kitchen faucet, and to reset two toilets. Ahh...the glamorous life :)
It is so challenging to come up with good stuff, but it IS do-able. Sometimes I go blank, ha!
Always open to great ideas for truly healthy foods. Maybe we can share some along the way.
Leora, I DO feel your pain (No joke!) I have to watch DH make some of those choices :/
One helpful thing we do is - to not have processed food even in the house, so bad choices are severely limited.
Another thing is to make sure there is plenty of good fat in the diet, to help curb craving.
Do you think your son would enjoy making a healthy pizza? Tirzah and I tried the recipe in Nourishing Traditions (fermented the flour dough ahead of time) and it was delish :)
Well, here's what I've found as my own experience (and, sorry, it's the long answer :)
I think getting my child to eat healthy is one of my very biggest challenges, and it's taken me a while to come to where I am now, letting go!
Let me explain. My oldest 4 ate healthy because that was what we gave them and had no junk in the house and I was very strict when we were out. Sadly authoritarian :/
I am blessed by the fact that, though my first 4 went out and ate tons of junk food as soon as they left home, that they have gradually gravitated to EXTREMELY good choices, and now walk with me on this path of ever-learning, ever-growing in better ways to prepare food, etc. And even share my excitement over it!
Fortunately for my youngest, the Lord has brought me to a much healthier inner place, and she has not had the same authoritarian upbringing. She has flourished and I know I'm on track to let her lead the way as to what is best for her, especially in our radical Unschooling. She is cooperative, hardworking when needed, creative, outgoing, entrepreneurial, etc. Has her share of not-so-exciting traits, too!
I am SO passionate about truly healthy eating that I drew the line and made exceptions to my way of raising her, and did my best to be strict about the healthy foods. Constant struggle.
FINALLY I discovered that the best way for us was, again, the child-led approach. On her own, she asked one of her big sisters (now a holistic nutritionist) for help because she didn't want to be craving junk food so much.
Since then, I try to let go (sometimes I make it, sometimes I don't!) and it's been interesting. I do as you, always try to keep the fresh steamed vegs, etc she likes on the table. And I'm probably too free with my 'remember, this or that is good for you because blahblahblah!
She sometimes makes good choices and sometimes does not. But I see a pattern developing, she goes cyclically, and is becoming aware of that herself. Recently,after an extended time of not-so-good choices, she quit a fencing session early, which she normally would NEVER do. Usually PASSIONATE about her fencing, she found she did not have the energy or drive to compete against the men she usually fights. She told me it was time for her to start eating right again.
This process of letting her figure stuff out for herself is painful for me. I think it was best for me to do as I did when she was tiny. And I think it is best for me to let go now that she is older.

Glad you enjoyed the Tai Chi speaker and demo, sounds wonderful. I've been thinking to try it for some time now. Was first introduced to the idea by a Chinese seat mate on a flight back to the US. She was big on it and made a great pitch for it :)
So what will your deciding factor(s) be for the January class???

I look forward to hearing about the AntiCancer book. My mother died young of massive heart attack, in spite of (actually because of) doing what was considered very 'healthy' at the time. No fats, etc.
I didn't connect all the dots about it until I started learning the info in Nourishing Traditions. My beloved holistic nutritionist stepmom turned me onto it. She was influenced by Dr. Jordan Rubin (see me with him in my slideshow? :) I'm also blessed to have one of my daughters be a holistic nutritionist. And for all my children to be choosing more and more such good stuff. Does a mama's heart good, yes?

Yay!!! Another nutrition nerd!!! I am an avid supporter of Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions and the Weston A. Price Foundation. Among many other good things, nutritionally and holistically speaking :)
I really enjoy my weekly trips to the Farmers Mkt because there are SO many people looking for answers and ready to hear what I have to say. Before I go, I request that God orchestrate divine meetings for me, and every week leave the Market in awe. Not that I don't learn, too!!!
Hmm...my lentil curry is still a bit flat, definitely not tasting as good as it smells yet. Gotta find a good way to 'doctor' it before my family gets home.
