A little about yourself...
I research metaphors in mathematics and consult on mathematics education, online communities, and social media. My daughter is ten. She likes writing, art, mathematics and online communities.

My husband and I own and operate two companies. Natural Math, LLC is our education consulting and development firm. Natural Math runs workshops and seminars, provides individual and group coaching to educators from college professors and school teachers to parents, and organizes community events such as Math Clubs or Family Studies.

Phenix Solutions, Inc is our software and design firm. We have about twenty staff members. Phenix divides its time between our own projects and working for other companies. It does product and project development for large companies, and also helps start-ups to get off the ground. Hi Maria,

I'm writing to introduce you to a new website I launched for Triangle parents a little over a year ago. Triangle TRACKS, located online at www.triangletracks.com, is an acronym for "Tools, Resources and Activities for Carolina Kids." As a local mom of three and a former magazine editor, I've come across lots of great resources for kids in the Triangle region, so I decided to put them all on ONE website for local families to use. Triangle TRACKS is also a social networking site for parents, so those who join can post blogs, forums, calendar events and other information for other parents to see. I also issue a free, monthly e-newsletter filled with children’s events and resources planned for that month. Let me know if you’d like to subscribe.

Due to the success of Triangle TRACKS, I started Charlotte TRACKS at www.charlottetracks.com for parents in the Charlotte region last month. I’m hoping it will achieve the same success as Triangle TRACKS.

I wanted to reach out to you to find out if you could let your Triangle friends know about this site via email, Twitter or other social networking sites you belong to. And if you get a chance, let me know what you think of Triangle TRACKS.

By the way, my Twitter URL is http://twitter.com/triangletracks.

Thanks,
Elizabeth Shugg

I Maria, you left me a comment about wanting to ask me questions about publishing. Are you thinking about writing a book? Sounds like you have a full plate. I am a publishing consultant. What do you have in mind?

Also ... if you would like to write an article about your "My Young Apprentice" efforts/endeavors for our Feb. Mothers Institute Newsletter (which comes out the last week of the month) that would be great. Let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

No word back yet from my NC mom ... she's pregnant and has been miserable with morning sickness as of late :-( I'll email her again tomorrow and get back to you as soon as I know something regarding a possible teleconference.

BTW, I saw your "beet salad beet haters love w/the secret ingredients being raisins and garlic" mentioned on Leslie's page ... would you be inclined to send the recipe my way so I could include it in an upcoming Mothers Institute Weekly Update?

I'm curious, Maria, if you've done the actual math as per the square foot gardening? Including the vertical option?

It's great that you consume a lot of vegetables. Our family always has, too. Good luck in finding good options that work well for you.

What method of pickling do you use?

Blessings!

Do let me know what she thinks of the Lioness quartet!

I hear you about some of the co-ops. I buy mostly local, from the farmers market. And am hoping to shift over to producing a great deal of what we need, ourselves, even tho we don't currently have any gardening area. I just started composting in a garbage bin. And am gathering materials to start sq. ft. gardening, will have to be very creative as to where these will go! Have you seen The ALL New Square Foot Gardening book?

Blessings!

Is your daughter reading any of Tamora Pierce's books? Her Lioness quartet was invaluable to my daughter in preparing mentally for her fencing. She attributes a crucial degree of her success to that.

What area did you come from? Does your farmers market have any produce that is not pesticide-laden? Ours has some organic, some that is organic but not certified, some that doesn't have pesticides but they do fertilize, and some that is questionable.

Have you read the book Nourishing Traditions yet?

Blessings on the rest of your weekend!

Absolutely. But how often do our kids get that "whole package" in school?

That's one of the reasons I chose to home school my younger ones. The older kids go to high school, and we supplement at home to help them get that whole package. But how do parents with little math and science in their repertoire help their student children "get" it?

Video conferencing is an intriguing idea. What age group would you target? We have a mid-winter conference here in March. This is our 2nd year. I imagine the program is already set for this year. But next year might be a good possibility. Also, there are some other conferences here in our state. The first one that comes to my mind is the one in Lansing every year that is part of the state-wide group. I'll keep you in mind.

How's the weather down there?! My best friend moved to S.C. a few months ago and she keeps telling me I need to come visit. Sounds like it has been pretty nice. My DH and I went X-country skiing this morning. It was gorgeous out there. It is supposed to get colder in a couple of days. I don't mind because it keeps the snow around. I hate it when it thaws out, gets really muddy and icky, and all the snow disappears because it is not much fun outside at that point. The snow covering really does make everything glisten and it is really beautiful.
