Jan, Thanks for your Mom Blog thread on the SAHM mom group. It is great to be able to find other at-home parents sharing their experiences. I am from East Central Illinois, so we're not too far from each other. I'm off to look at your blog -- It's good to meet you. ;)

"My young apprentice" is a (now tiny) network of concerned parents, their kids and their friends who want to help kids connect with professionals for micro-apprenticeships. The problem: kids have no idea how real jobs look and feel, and have no first-hand experiences even within their favorite fields. "I want to be an engineer" - well, have you ever seen one at work?
We are yet to figure out what's a good way to "house" the network. We recently started a ning for it (http://myyoungapprentice.ning.com/), but many people are at "email and browser" tech level and aren't joining. We'll just have to be more active and work harder, I guess.
I joined your site and I am looking forward to hearing from the NC person.
Teleconferencing is a great way to connect. I am thinking in particular about the themes of being empowered as a math creator, and then using mathematics to empower you in other areas of your life.
"Missing metaphors" and the resulting grief is another interesting theme. For example, people who don't understand continuity or gradient on a deep enough, intuitive level often fall into "black and white thinking patterns." People who can't deal with power and logarithmic ways of thinking don't develop strong intuitions about global issues dealing with millions and billions of units. Statistical reasoning is also often problematic, from "I smoked all my life and I am fine" to applying population averages to individual cases.
Then, of course, we have more straightforward "math-activism" connections such as logic and logical fallacies, and psychological extensions of the classical rules of rhetoric. Or outlining and data organizing skills such as mind maps or Wordle frequency analysis.
Hi, your institute sounds interesting! I am doing some online and face-to-face projects with kids and their adults, mostly about mathematics, but also one about professional orientation called "My Young Apprentice." Maybe we can collaborate in some ways.
