In our book, MANAGING YOUR BOOK WRITING BUSINESS, Jamie and I talk about how to figure out what you want/need/have a hope of getting when you seek publication for a book. You need to look at your own finances and your expectations. As you can see...

If you live in the Houston area and are attending TLA (Texas Library Assn) convention this week, stop by The Final Twist Writers. Exhibit Booth 1744. We'll have a daily drawing and fun books for sale. :-)

While free is always nice, Carbonite (and other back up services) also back up proprietary computer data that you wouldn't want posted in a public forum. In any case, an external back up hard drive will also secure your data. Or, as I mentioned, ...

I'd also make some backup copies! I use carbonite and also carry a copy of WIPs on a jump drive. Computers have been known to eat more than homework! =8-0

Sometimes you have to allow yourself to grieve and heal, Lisa. It depends. Some people are able to channel the grief into their work. But that doesn't work for everyone. Being a care giver is VERY draining. When my word well seems dry, I read old ...

Welcome, Amy. My daughter is a foodie, too. :-) Did you read that book about the gal who cooked every recipe in the Julia Child cookbook? My daughter loved that one. Me, I thought it was fascinating that Julia Child was in the OSI in WWII. I like ...

My daughter uses an online portfolio site called folio-live.com.She's a graphic designer. She also has portable portfolio. I'd do online, but have an offline option in case you're asked for it.

So, I Didn't Die Friday Night...

...and I'm really glad about it. A routine trip to pick up the hubby from the airport turned nasty when someone slammed into us while we were sitting at a stop light. My sturdy (new) truck deflected most of the force of the hit away from us and we walked away with bruises and a new appreciation for breathing.

I'm glad I still have time to do the things I've put off, and things I haven't finished. I still have time to go visit my parents and hugs my kids. Too often we go through life thinking we… Continue

An Empty Nest Mom

When I was first approached (via tweet) about this site, my first thought was, "What do I have to bring to a group like this?" My nest is empty, my thoughts turning to building a strong relationship with the hubby and managing my new free time.

I look at young moms and not so young moms and I remember. I remember how tired I was, first from chasing little ones and then from laying awake at night waiting for teens to come home safely. We've navigated losing the hubby's parents (I'm lucky my pare… Continue

Managing Your Book Writing Business

I'm really excited that my 13th book released this last week. It's called Managing Your Book Writing Business, and was co-written with Jamie Engle. Here's the blurb:

Are you a writer? Have you published your work or are you seeking publication? Did you know that you are also a small business owner? This helpful handbook outlines basic and important information every author needs to know about the publishing industry and the “business” of writing. From developing a business plan to culContinue

Author as Product

When I first started writing, I didn't think of what I wrote or myself as a product that needed to be packaged or advertised. When I published my first book in 1999, it began to dawn on me that there was creating and then there was the business of writing. Ten books later, I'm still trying to juggle the demands of the muse against the demands of the practical.

And more often than not, I drop both.

I must be crazy, but I still keep trying.

Megan sent out a note asking members to post a… Continue

You can click on start a discussion at the top of the group page. I started a discussion on Making a difference. So it's pretty easy to do. Let me know if you need help. And thanks for the help!

Pauline: What small presses do you recommend? Also, you had a great idea about organinzing discussions. Yes, different discussions can be done on different subjects! Great idea! I'm not sure if some of those should eventually be turned into a separate group. What do you think?

I was wondering if it is possible to organize the discussions into sub groups? Perhaps have writing helps/how tos, promotion/books/services for sale section and then writing critiques/prompts section. Could also have a section on selling/submitting/writing leads. Other ideas? Is it possible? Might make it faster for people to find topics they are interested in?

Too funny! Guess cats can be like some people I've known, bitter for no apparent reason, eh?

Blessings!

Thanks for your comments on "Pen Names" Everything you said was very insightful. I think I've decided at this point to use my real name for any possible publishings, and a pen name on my blog and my internet workings, because I talk about things that shouldn't necessarily be associated with any books I may publish.
