A Superhero in Our Midst

I'd heard about such kids. Tall tales of children that, when agitated, used their mutant powers of regurgitated food to silence their enemies. Toddlers with unflinching focus, determination, and sour milk resources. Little ones that leave you in such a state of shock, you were left questioning everything you thought you knew about parenting. I never thought I'd have such a child.

Vacation Shmacation

So, on my last day at the beach for the holiday weekend and it occurred to me...I'm exhausted. I just went to put my one-year-old down for his afternoon nap and fell into a deep sleep for several minutes while holding him. I was rudely smacked back into consciousness by The Wordless Wonder. "What? Huh? Who?" I sputtered until I realized what had happened. I looked down to see his smiling face and the weapon that shocked me back awake (his hand) still resting firmly on my cheek.

Mean Girls -- Mommy Style

I thought cliques were done and gone once you left highschool. Wrong-o. Apparently when your kids start going to school, that curious "in" crowd and "out" crowd phenomena that dominated your pubescent life rears its ugly head. Except this time, you're in your mid-30s, it's the moms, and the "in" criteria includes seniority, number of kids, and the ever-elusive (to me at least) "craftiness" factor.

A World Record

I think my children just set a world record for number of dumps taken in one day (yes, I am going there). That means I spent a good portion of yesterday as a human ping pong between one small ass and another even smaller ass.

Yes, my husband was nearly 'creamed' when we first got there, because of looking the wrong way (not being used to vehicles driving on the 'other' side of the street) before crossing - started to step into the street and a big bus whooshed by, just missed running him over.

Yes, we worked there. It was an amazing 13 years. We'll never be the same. It was torture for my oldest to return to the US. They didn't want to! Wanted to stay and go to school there. I told them a degree from the Univ there would not be as valuable as one from here. To go to college in the US and learn to be American. And then decide where they wanted to live and who they wanted to marry.
They felt so alone when they went to college. White on the outside, but oriental on the inside.

It hurt me so much when I realised how tough it was for them to come here and told them I was sorry I'd raised them in Thailand. They were very quick to tell me that they did NOT regret being raised there, that they felt enriched by it. They all eventually adjusted. And have been able to visit 'home' :)

My husband visited a lot of friends there last October and had a wonderful time. Funny, but I'm not ready, don't know if I ever will be. I think it would hurt too much to go back, I want to remember things and people as they were, know what I mean? The pictures shocked me, our home on the klong that was the largest as well as one of the very few houses along the red dirt road is now dwarfed by structures on all sides (it used to have 3 empty rice fields around it, where water buffalo lounged in my kitchen water and washing machine drain-off). And there are NO empty lots whatsoever now! The road is paved, of course. And the wonderfully primitive klong has been cemented all around, the bamboo groves gone, the rickety old bridges replaced with big cement ones, etc, etc. Ahh...'progress'...

It's late and I'm rambling, time for sweet dreams!

My 15 yr old and I laughed SO much today while out on business. Did you and your little ones? I remember how infectious our babies' laughs were :)

Blessings...

What area of Bangkok?

I think there was a TON more danger from the traffic there than from the snakes, even tho we managed to attract countless snakes. We had a large cobra on our back step the first week we moved into our house in Bangkok and then a lot more snakes both there and upcountry (stayed in Bangkok 2 yrs to learn the language then moved to MahaSarakham for the remainder of those 13 yrs).

We had many other varieties show up, in addition to all the cobras. Once I stir-fried one that came to visit :)

Yes, let's do keep in touch!

Blessings...
