I grew up without a tv. It's not a necessity, but it's ok to have.

Mother foils kidnapping at Pike Place Market

To be categorized as "A Super Mom" and "Ugh, what an ugly world":

SEATTLE - A little boy was shaken up, but OK after police say a man tried to kidnap him at the Pike Place Market Monday morning.

A family with three children, ages 5, 6, and 7, were at the Market just after 11 a.m. The mother stopped to remove a rock from her foot cast, and the father turned to help her.

Once the rock was removed, they turned around and noticed their 5-year-old son was missing.

School lunches are last bastion for trans-fats

I continue to be amazed and appalled by the fact that publicly-funded school meals defy all nutritional sense and even government-imposed requirements! The latest: King County (Washington state) has banned all artificial trans fats from restaurants in cooking and baking but the public schools have been exempted from the ban. Why? by helping our public libraries you help our kids!

As with all well-intentioned legislation, it looks like there is a downside to the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, Some have interpreted the Act to include library materials and are asking that 1) all materials be tested by libraries (most have been tested by manufacturers) and/or 2) ban children under 12 from our public libraries.

The American Library Association has posted an Action Alert asking people to call the Gener… Continue

Can Yelling at Your Kids Be Good?

I'm pleading the 5th on this one, but can relate with this New York Times piece. My great-grandmother put it best when she said "Kids grow up despite their parents".
