It’s the most wonderful time of the year – for entertaining! A crucial part of holiday parties are the drinks, but it’s never as simple as “grabbing a bottle of wine.” Should you buy red or white? Do you serve it from the bottle? Do you offer beer...

I think you should express your feelings to your mom. She might not be aware of the fact on how much this behaviour hurts you. I believe that grandmothers should love and give their time equally to all grandchildren. How about finding a compromise...

That's actually a tough one. How many hours exactly? LOL. There's just so much I would want to do, but I'm sure that a day isn't long enough. I would take my camera and go on a photo walk. I would knit. I would declutter my entire house, then land...

My kids get shy around my mother too! And I get the same reaction from her. Except she says I live too far. I'm sorry. A visit every 6 weeks isn't too much to ask. I try to organize get togethers when I can. But it would be nice to see her show as...

Yes, I totally agree. My kids now call our closest friends Aunt and Uncle because they are much more prominent in their lives than my own family. It still makes me so sad. My mother told me when my girls were very young that she didn't want to be ...

I let her know about their plays and things they have going on but she doesn't want to make the drive - usually they're doing the week and she doesn't want to deal with traffic. If she watches the girls, I take them to her house since she's doing ...

I too invite ppl I know that will come to my childrens important events. Our good friends are more family than my mother. Our friends Mike and Sam and now had Uncle put in front of their names. My kids will go to them before my mother. I agree wi...

I feel like you have just shared my story. I live in Oregon, three hours away from my mother. My sister lives in WA where my mom lives like 30mins away. My mom has NEVER been to my house the five years we've lived here, yet she drives by many time...

Are you only inviting your mom over when you need help and when you will not be there? I think you can not ignore the 45 minute distance for your mother every time she visits or helps (plus 45 minutes on the other end). Now that she has two sets o...

I have dealt with this with another family member. Luckily we have other family members who are anxious to be a part of my kids events so I invite them to everything. I keep inviting the other person as well. As time passes the person with the fav...

A little about yourself...
I am not defined by one thing. In reality, I'm probably a little confused. Regardless ... I'm a thirty-something, married, ex-SAHM (That's "stay-at-home-mom" for those of you who aren't or weren't.) to fun-loving 4- and 6-year-old girls, and a Senior Copywriter in one of the country's largest pharmaceutical advertising agencies. We have left the city of Philadelphia and moved into a 97-year-old house in the 'burbs (sort of). I like to tell it like it is, and prefer people who do the same.

When your sister's kids are getting all the attention ...

My two girls are 5 and 7 years old. They were the first two grandchildren for my mother until my younger sister had her daughter nearly 4 years ago and, most recently, her son. Until my niece and nephew came into the picture my kids received alot of attention, as you would imagine. My mother and sister live exactly 7 minutes away from each other, so it's convenient for my mom to stop in for visits and babysit on a last-minute notice. I am 45 minutes away, what seems like to my mother a hefty dis… Continue
