My husband & I are meeting with a potential birthmom tonight. We are so excited. It's through our agency. Wow! She is due next month! This is our first time doing this so we are nervous but full of hope. We will just be ourselves and go in there w...
I had no idea it was national adoption week/month (I've been told both?!), until someone commented on my blog about it :)
So I made a post. Very cool, and loving the new thingsd I learn as we embark on year #1 of this!
For mothers of adopted children (domestic and international) - a place to share ideas and experiences, find and give support, and, of course, brag about our amazing kids :) PAPs (prospective adoptive parents) also welcome!!
I'm 34 years old, I live in Southwest Florida with my husband, Tom, my daughter, Grace (born 10/20/05 in Danang, Vietnam) and my little zoo of pets. When I'm not hanging out with my family, I design and create jewelry.
My big thing right now is the realization that just because I'm in my 30's, and a mom, my life is NOT mapped out in front of me. There's still time for me to do a lot of things. Travel, pursue a dream career, be the person I dreamed of being when I was 16 years old...
Random things about me:
- I love art, music, movies, and books.
- Even though I'm "done" with school, I still dream of being a curator, astronomer (looking through telescopes all day...), or librarian, but none of these are likely to happen as I have no desire to go back to school. Well, I have the desire, but not the energy, not at this very moment. But maybe when I have a lot of grey hair, and free time, I will return.
- I do have a B.A. in Art History and an M.A. in Film Studies, both from Emory University, in Atlanta.
- I write fiction, a chapter a day. It's just for fun, really.
- I am, and have always been, obsessed with museums and cats, especially the four felines in my family. I love my cats- they bring me a lot of comfort, happiness, and serenity.
- I USED to spend most of my free time making jewelry, painting, reading, swimming, napping, scrapbooking, organizing stuff around the house, but having a child changed all that. I do those things when I can.
- I spend a lot of time volunteering at a local animal shelter. I'm insanely passionate about stopping animal abuse and cruelty. If you're an "animals don't have souls or personalities" kind of person, a lot of what I have to say may annoy you.
- I've been a vegetarian for 17 years. I don't think it's for everyone, though.
- My husband and I are Unitarians but we haven't been to church in quite a while.
- I love candy. I have lots of it stashed around the house but I never get around to eating most of it. I just like *having* it in case I need it. I also love baked goods- cookies, cupcakes, brownies.
- I am currently obsessed with musicians Tegan & Sara and Neko Case. Girls rock.
- I hate people who text/talk on their cell phone when they drive.
- I lived in Atlanta from 1992-1999 and am still very homesick for the place even though it's changed so much in the last decade that it breaks my heart.
- I have strange interests, but they are based more on general curiosity rather than on overwhelming academic interest- the weird animals at the very bottom of the deepest ocean, looking at maps of the planet from millions of years ago, environmental conditions on other planets, strange islands in the middle of nowhere with incredible complex pasts (Easter Island, etc.)... I like stuff that freaks me out a little.
- I swim two miles a day, every single day. I've done it since I was 19 years old, and only skip when I absolutely have to. I think I have skipped maybe 20 times total in the last 15 years (a few hurricanes, recovery from surgery, and a bad bad flu).
