Investigative journalist Nena Baker is the author of The Body Toxic: How the Hazardous Chemistry of Everyday Things Threatens Our Health and Well-being (North Point Press/Farrar, Straus and Giroux). I first met Nena when we both spoke at the Women, Health & Environment Conference sponsored by the Heinz Endowment in 2008. Since then, I've been a fan of her investigations into the impact that toxic chemicals have on our bodies as well as the planet. In the first of a two-part article, Nena exp… Continue

Having been born within the industrial and technological era has definitively brought many positive things to our lives. Clean water, sewers, roads, access to Hospitals and so much more! But also, looking back into at least the 19th century, I must acknowledge they had a few things that I would rather have, perhaps, less pollution, less toxic chemicals filtering our waters and lands, and for sure, more pure and natural foods.
The industrialized world has helped us but has also made us somehow h… Continue

Do you ever feel like you need an extra push to get motivated? Are you tired of all the fad diets and starving yourself? I most definitely was when I ran across a product claiming to lose inches in 45 minutes! I was like, “yeah right.” But, I did my homework and found out there are different types of wraps and the one I was researching was an herbal body wrap and not a water loss wrap.
Herbal wraps have been around for centuries and they made the first appearance in America in 1960’s. Typically… Continue

Hello Jewels Girls!
Take a good look at this photo from a Ralph Lauren ad. What do you think about the model in this ad? I was shocked and horrified that such a leading fashion designer would think that this ad is appealing to a woman/girl… Continue

Hank, my bathroom scale, is trying to seduce me. I told him that our relationship is over. Well over for the next 28 days while I am on the Slim For Life food plan. Hank and I have been through a lot of ups and downs over the years. He's been with me through Weight Watchers, the Atkin's Diet (that was more of an up than a down) and the South Beach Diet. He was virtually ignored during my pregnancy, especially towards the end when I tipped the scales at 174 pounds. And over the last few years, we… Continue

in the mirror? In that bathing suit? In that thong? When in the hell did my ass morph into THIS? I hate being a hypocrite. I would tell any other woman (and mean it) that they were beautiful just the way they are. To embrace their stretch marks, flab, cellulite, curves, breasts deflated by feeding our young, etc. But telling myself is proving to be difficult. I tried explaining it to my SIL the other day. I was skinny my whole life. Annoyingly so. I never worked out & ate anything & ever… Continue
Did you read the article in the New York times several months ago, “What’s Eating Our Kids? Fears About ‘Bad’ Foods”?
My first thought was, “Oh my gosh, am I creating an eating disorder in my children because I am feeding them – and teaching them about – healthy foods?” And then it hit me: “PLEEEEAAASE…give me a break, media. Don’t you get it? YOU are making us crazy!”
On the one hand, the media “feeds” us images upon images of the way girls and women (and boys and men) are “supposed to” look.… Continue

June was a month full of rain and judgements, and I'm not sure which I saw more of. From judgements about the way people look to judgements about whether a person is smart or strong enough to achieve their goals, judgement is harsh and hurtful.
I myself have experienced judgement on several occasions over the past month. It reminds me of how we judge celebrities and their bodies when they're wearing bathing suits on the beach. You RARELY hear someone say, "She looks great!" It's either, "She's… Continue

I have been trying so many different brands of skin care and makeup during the years to find some that really is gentle but still gives the skin what it need. Lots of money have been spent on rather expensive product but without any positive results and sometimes even making the skin react in a negative way.
Now I had decided to go green : ]. I have always liked that idea and have tested a few greener alternatives but of course not all is suitable for my skin type. So many developments have bee… Continue

Ok I finished the first couple of weeks with my bodybugg. I had my coaching session. But I need to get serious now! I burn a lot of calories in a day and it very rare I don't do at least 10,000 steps. For those of you who don't know it measures calories burned, steps taken, and activity in minutes. I started getting up before the kids and my husband at 6pm and working out for an hour. I love working out but not at that ungodly hour! I also take the baby out for walks and running after her all da… Continue

You go to the dressing room to try them on and suddenly something is missing. Every thing is fitting everywhere else, you are looking good! You turn around and there goes the disappointment. Your hips and curves are loving the jeans but your butt seems to be missing in action, I mean it's there but you know that if you wor… Continue

Why Buy Organic?
Top Reasons to Use Organic Body Care Products
To reduce the number of carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) entering your body. All chemicals penetrate the skin – that’s why skin-patches are now used for things like quitting smoking and birth control. As our largest organ, the skin absorbs everything and this includes the many carcinogens found in almost all body care products for women, men, and babies. Many people now believe that the less carcinogens you put into your body… Continue
