As a survivor of 20 years from breast cancer, I can tell you this noise is getting louder and not necessarily clearer. Like white noise, it tends to distract rather than inform. Like most cancer survivors, I found my tumor with a self exam, at age 39. I had 3 children, the youngest was two years old. I found my cancer while showering and within a few hours I was undergoing a biopsy a few days before Christmas.
Before New Years Day, I was in surgery for a mastectomy and soon was immersed in the…

When I was around my mid 30s. My father called all of us kids and told us he wanted to talk with us. Well to us that meant something serous has happened or is fixing to happen. We gathered at Mom and Dad's House and sat outside under the porch. I was really worried because ,while I was staying there for a few days cause of my pregnancy. I noticed something that no one else did. I saw things I wish I would never have seen. My father rolling around on the floor not to play with their dogs or the g…

My grandmother was a breast cancer survivor. She had a mastectomy at a time when I was too young to even understand
what that meant. I am now 38 and acutely aware of what it means as we honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month. My grandmother outlived her cancer, dying of natural causes, and I know many of you who are taking care of your elders or dear friends are praying for the same outcome.
Not too long ago we were introduced to a few remarkable women who created the TNBC foundation in honor of a…

Five years ago, while doing an interview for a newspaper in Raleigh, North Carolina, my daughter Tabitha, who was 14 at the time, told the reporter, she just always assumed she was destined to get Breast Cancer and, “never thought I wouldn’t get it.”
Hearing her say it aloud-- I felt like I had been kicked in the heart. The first thing a Mother thinks about when diagnosed with Breast Cancer is how it will affect her children. The last thing she wants is her own daughter to be diagnosed with it,…

Yesterday I was standing with her two young children in Times Square. One year ago my friend was bald. Yesterday she sported a great new hairdo. One year ago my friend was dying. Yesterday my friend was LIVING. One year ago she had lost her compass and didn't know where she was going. Yesterday she knew where she was and where she was going. On…

One of the biggest health epidemics today is vitamin D deficiency. If you have not done so this year, you absolutely have to go and get your vitamin D levels checked by your doctor. Request that your doctor give you the 25(OH)D test because that’s the best test to measure your vitamin D levels. The test is a simple blood test that can be requested during your routine annual physical. Doctors now understand the benefit of having optimal levels of vitamin D, and it appears that all health issues m…
