Last month, a colleague approached me about exploring the role of acupuncture in weight loss. As a traditional Western medicine physician, I was skeptical about its merits. While many of my patients have used herbs and other holistic treatments, I have never been a believer. But, since I am willing to do anything to help my patients, I decided to use myself as a guinea pig to see if acupuncture was something I should be recommending.
First, I did some research. I wanted to know the science behi… Continue

Our worst fears have finally come true. Overweight teens are dying from heart disease. Pediatricians have long feared that the rising number of severely obese children and teens would soon start to suffer from adult complications of obesity, like heart attacks, strokes, and death. And now it is happening.
According to the St. Louis County medical examiner, a 13-year old football player who collapsed during football practice died as a direct result of “hypertensive cardiovascular disease”, also… Continue

After I wrote my last post about my weight loss "battle," I had to rethink how I was presenting my situation. Calling it a battle seems so negative--so win/lose. At times, I guess I feel that way. But right now I'm winning the battle and it feels great!
I have focused on three things: commitment, goals and support. I've committed to shed some pounds. I've set up goals for myself and shared those with others. And most importantly, I've relied on help.
I mentioned before that I hired a certified… Continue

I am a huge believer in opening yourself up to new things in order to learn more for yourself, your family, friends and clients/coworkers, and when I had the opportunity to learn a little bit about a new and interesting topic, I went for it. I was skeptical about energy medicine going into the class, but I tried to have an open a mind in order to get as much out of the "Introduction to Energy Medicine" weekend as possible. Here are a few things I learned from Donna Eden and David Feinstein at th… Continue

Man I didn't realize how long I was gone. Almost a week since I have posted anything. Last week I went to lunch with a friend, I think I blogged about this, and we discussed diet. Mostly discussed carbohydrates. And since then, I have been addicted to anything about healthy living. I have a standing appointment to watch "You Are What You Eat" on BBCAmerica. I even ordered two of Gillian McKeith's books, because I am so smitten with her techniques and advice. Oh, alright she is a bit gruff someti… Continue

With my husband working out of town for two weeks and a major deadline looming, “stressed” barely described what I was feeling last week. I hurt. Specifically, my neck hurt. And my back. Basically a solid “V” of pain stretched from my lower back to my shoulder blades, then turned in at m… Continue

So I took a mini-sabbatical, a mental check out, if you will. I just reached a point where I couldn't do it. I just couldn't do it. I was frustrated, I was worn out, I was unmotivated. Mostly, I didn't know if I even wanted to continue. So I went to lunch today with a college friend who is a fitness trainer and is in graduate school for health and fitness. If anyone could clarify things for me, it would be her.
And boy, did she clarify things for me.
We spent two hours over lunch discussing my… Continue

Well, after a nice long holiday weekend, it is officially swimsuit time and I can hear the groans from many of you. Not only do you have to pack a billion things (just in case) for a 2 hour stint at the pool, but you need to fit into last year’s suit after a long winter.
Personally I judge myself on whether or not I can see my feet. If my belly is bloated so much I can’t see my toes, I know I need to do a little maintenance ASAP. The secret weapons are….drum roll…….diet and exercise. Okay, Okay… Continue

Simply put, “core muscles” lock down parts of our torsos to give us extra stability when our bodies need it, for example, when throwing a ball or picking up a toddler. The three most important core muscle groups are:
1. those in our backs,
2. those under our spines, and
3. our abdominals.
The word “core” became popular in the 90s when aerobics and yoga
turned out to have not much effect on students’ waists-lines. Today Amazon.com sells hundreds of titles that include the word “core." Some of t… Continue
