Your ‘Go To’ Girl... (from our website
www.teamjessee.com)
I keep getting asked the same questions about our journey and about health/mommy related topics as well... And since I don’t think the interview with Julia is going to happen (at least not yet!) I hope a little quasi interview with yours truly will suffice!
Before we get into the questions, first I want to say that I think it’s funny that I keep getting asked these questions. I get them almost da…

On Saturday, November 7, Food Network had a cooking with kids day. I saw Paula Deen and the Barefoot Contessa. Paula was pretty good, Ina Garten, on the other hand was, let’s go with ‘interesting’. Now, I do like Ina Garten, she’s a great cook. I love when she has her parties and her recipes are delicious; BUT, arugula on pizza for kids? And, spicy olive oi…

A sneak peek into todays blog... ;)
"This book is so beyond amazing and I have not even got to try the majority of them yet. Some are really simple ideas like "Waffle Grilled Cheese" which is as easy as it sounds... just like making a regular grilled cheese but on a waffle maker instead of a skillet... Or, the Banana Hotdog?? Hot dog Bun... Banana... PB & j... crazy right? But genius... all the fun of a hot dog... with none of thr gross fats and fillers of a hotdog! But my favorite that I h…

I was speaking to Loraine, another mum of my vintage today, who has also raised 4 children (now young adults).
We spoke about how we would start our baby's off on very small amounts of a variety of foods at a young age and we didn't have near the amount of food allergies as there is today. Over the last 6 years there has been a 500% increase in food related allergies. What is going wrong?
There are many contributing thoughts and much research to back up why.
1. Holding off introducing foods f…

Hormones are responsible for much more than just acne in teenagers and mood swings in pregnant women. They are the messengers for much of your body’s functioning, including growth and development, immune response, regulation of metabolism, and reproduction among other things.
The body creates its own hormones to take care of these vital duties, but many synthetic chemicals also mimic hormones. Some are intentionally developed to do so, like birth control pills or recombinant bovine growth hormo…

The apple, a globe or heart shaped fruit that got Eve in a bunch of trouble comes from a small deciduous tree and is a member of the Rose family, really roses. The tree originated in Central Asia somewhere between the Caspian and Black Seas. While archeologists have found evidence of humans enjoying their “apple a day” as far back as 6500 BC; Alexander the Great is credited with finding the dwarfed apple trees and introducing it to Europe.…

Let me give you a little history. Recently, for a whole bunch of reasons (frustration with supermarket quality, the desire to cook more, the desire to give my kids a stronger culinary base and get them past eating mac and cheese all the time, the desire to be greener), I've made three big changes in the way I get most of my food. First, I order produce from Urban Organic, a company originating in Brooklyn, NY. They provide a weekly box of organic produce to your door for about $35 bucks a week t…

When you are expecting a sweet bundle of joy and that little wonder will be one of 5 siblings it becomes very obvious that one needs to be very creative when it comes to preparing his/her arrival.
So here are four ways that I am trying out in order to have a baby on a buck. This time I am going to try coupons, cloth diapers (still under consideration) consignment shops, nursing and making my own baby food.
Buck Saver Number One: Coupons, Sweepstakes and Freebies:
As I stated in a previous pos…

No one denies that snacking, when done properly, is a great way to keep your energy up and your weight down. And with today’s busy lifestyles, having “grab and go” snacks are a way of life for most of us. But have you ever stopped to think of the cost to your wallet and your health? The snack industry estimates that the retail sales of packaged snacks are at $68 billion for 2008, with projected sales to be near $82 billion by 2013. Yes BILLION!
I agree in some way that having portioned controll…

A lot (2 words people, 2 words!) of folks are asking me things like "what do you think people should know about you?" I mean, I blog and all--lay my soul bare, yet we really don't know each other, do we? Like, what mascara can I not live without? What is my fave wine? How do I text you back so fast? Do I play an instrument? You know, important crap like that. So, purely in the nature of communicating pointless (yet somehow meaningful to someone) information, here goes:
1. I cannot live without…

So it’s no secret that I like to garden. I especially find it rewarding when my children and I can pick our own vegetables and eat them, our own farm to table program in the back yard. I also teach this concept at my children’s elementary school and am proud to say we have a tons of tomatoes ready to harvest right this minute and have had plenty of afternoon snacks in the playground.
As I was sitting at the kitchen table today looking at the screen of my laptop wondering what I should write abo…

Like many of you reading this blog, I subscribe to several email newsletters, some for work, some for pure enjoyment. One of the ones I receive for work related topics is
Innovations in Food Ingredients. It can get pretty technical at times so I usually just look it over to find out if anything is now dangerous that we have consumed in the past or what is coming down the pipeline as a trend. Today I was struck by an absurd title “Transparent gel advance may give ‘excellent food ingredient…

This past Thursday was my older child's first day of school. To celebrate, we went out for ice cream. As we walked from the car, we discussed what flavor he might like to have. His response was "pear!" I wasn't confident they would have such a gourmet flavor, so I mentioned that we could make our own pear ice cream sometime (though I'd never done it before!).
On the way back to the car, after he'd enjoyed his scoop of mint chocolate chip and I my cookies 'n cream, we bought an ice cream maker a…

Today is Thursday, and my favorite kid-friendly restaurant today is
Stir Crazy. When kids arrive, they receive an adorable Chinese take-out container filled with goodies, like chopsticks, a creative activity book and crayons. I love the kids menu because it has healthier options and my kids loved the food, and we all know how picky my kids are!
Tuesdays and Thursdays are Kids Eat Free, so run out to your nearest Stir Crazy! To read my review, or for more information on Stir Crazy a…

Moms, my favorite kids-friendly restaurant of the day is Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. My kids loved the menu and the food came in a replica of Forrest Gump's shrimp boat with a side of blue jello, something my 3 year old son had discovered (and loved) for the 1st time! I visited the Miami and the Ft. Lauderdale location and they had stroller parking, gave my kids balloons and the staff used kid-friendly common-sense! Yeah! This restaurant scored 3 spoons! For more information on Bubba Gump or for other…
