Since I have lived in this part of England I have not visited a McDonalds, shopped in a big Supermarket giant or had a Starbucks, Costa or Coffee Republic frappe. “Oh my god!” screamed my friend recently when I announced this fact, “that’s amazing.” And well, I suppose it is really. You see, before we sold up in the city and embarked on our new life – gosh 20 months ago now – we would often be tempted by these city living perks: pancakes and syrup on a Saturday morning, a weekly ‘one shop’ for e…

Did I say that my wandering spirit felt settled? I fear I lied. For yet again life has moved in a surprising direction and I find myself in another new abode. Panic not – I have not up-sticks and moved to outer Mongolia. No, I’ve simply relocated down the road and now find myself nestled within the heart of a traditional English market town. I meet elderly folk as I run each morning who step out with their cane to fetch the morning paper; their faithful collie ~ without lead yet obedient (unlike…

So it’s no secret that I like to garden. I especially find it rewarding when my children and I can pick our own vegetables and eat them, our own farm to table program in the back yard. I also teach this concept at my children’s elementary school and am proud to say we have a tons of tomatoes ready to harvest right this minute and have had plenty of afternoon snacks in the playground.
As I was sitting at the kitchen table today looking at the screen of my laptop wondering what I should write abo…

I am new to vegetable gardening and new to my house. Because of these things, I was not aware of the preparation that would be needed when I wanted to start a garden. Still in it's winter state, a month or so ago, my garden showed no sign of what weeds, trees and other secrets it produced. I might add that these things were produced very quick!
After learning about the certain times certain vegetables needed to be planted, I realized that the garden area would not be prepped in time. I decided…

One of the most economical gardening moves I ever made was to join my local horticulture club.
For just $12 a year, I get access to great gardening advice, some lovely garden tours, and a list-serv of other gardeners who are not only willing but eager to swap plants with me so we can all save some money.
I put that list-serv to good use this past weekend. After a harsh, dry winter, my yard needed a face lift. The sunny spot in front was completely overgrown with weeds. The mostly shady back ya…

It’s been a rough year. EcoStiletto.com is still the start-up that could (but can’t yet make any money), and my husband works in a fickle film industry. But I miss the little things that we now go without: Dinners out, guilt-free shopping, a bouquet of flowers on my dining room table.
After putting the Barnacle (read: baby) down for a nap on Sunday, I decided to do something about that last item on my do-not-buy list. After raking what seemed like a thousand tons of leaves and clearing out a ba…

On a recent trip to a restoration town in San Jose, CA, called
History San Jose, I was reminded of a time during WWI and WWII when schools, towns, churches and homes were encouraged, by their government, to “Grow Your Own”. These gardens were often called
Victory Gardens. The United States along with Great Britain, Canada and Australia put into motion a program by which the av…
