If you’re like me, then getting to the gym can be a real chore. Especially now that I’m blogging, I have come up with nearly every excuse in the book to avoid the gym. “I haven’t written a blog in a couple of days, so I want to write this morning. I have no time for the gym today!” Now I’m in pretty decent shape. I won’t lie. I’ve been active my entire life, from ballet as a little girl through to late teens, and then fitness after that. Being fit and eating healthy have always been a part of my…

I’ll never forget how I soaked up, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I saw the movie with a girlfriend in theaters when it first came out, and for us, it was two hours of bliss. The premise: a gorgeous burned-out forty-something woman reignites her fire by running away to Jamaica and finding a bedmate half her age. Now obviously, this is not what I would suggest for all women in a funk! It’s maybe a little… well… unrealistic. But you have written in ladies. Many of you are running around from work…

Your ‘Go To’ Girl... (from our website
www.teamjessee.com)
I keep getting asked the same questions about our journey and about health/mommy related topics as well... And since I don’t think the interview with Julia is going to happen (at least not yet!) I hope a little quasi interview with yours truly will suffice!
Before we get into the questions, first I want to say that I think it’s funny that I keep getting asked these questions. I get them almost da…

I just received some devastating news. My son informed me he is not going trick-or-treating this year! It was bad enough when my daughter stopped.
I’m having déjà vu. This reminds me of how I felt when my daughter was 2-1/2 years old and I learned that naptimes didn’t last forever. Ridiculously,…

After I wrote my last post about my weight loss "battle," I had to rethink how I was presenting my situation. Calling it a battle seems so negative--so win/lose. At times, I guess I feel that way. But right now I'm winning the battle and it feels great!
I have focused on three things: commitment, goals and support. I've committed to shed some pounds. I've set up goals for myself and shared those with others. And most importantly, I've relied on help.
I mentioned before that I hired a certified…

I don't expect you to eat 100% clean 24/7. I know that is a difficult thing to do, espeically when going out with friends, holidays, temptations lurking around every corner. So let's touch on the ever so popular topic of Cheat Meals. I believe they can be beneficial to your progress when handled properly. Now, first understand the word Cheat MEAL. No where in that sentence do you see the word DAY! Correct?
Most of the time, the trouble happens when you go completely crazy and eat whatever you w…

We've had a summer full of berries and other wonderful fruit, but who wants more besides me? Enjoy your final sunny days outside and go berry picking, burning calories, saving money, and spending quality time with friends and family. Or try a farmer's market for some local, fresh and mouthwatering fruit.
Berries provide vitamin C, fiber, anti-inflammatory properties, and loads of antioxidants to help prevent illness and disease (try guava and plums too!). Think elderberries, cranberries, black…

Did you read the article in the New York times several months ago, “What’s Eating Our Kids? Fears About ‘Bad’ Foods”?
My first thought was, “Oh my gosh, am I creating an eating disorder in my children because I am feeding them – and teaching them about – healthy foods?” And then it hit me: “PLEEEEAAASE…give me a break, media. Don’t you get it? YOU are making us crazy!”
On the one hand, the media “feeds” us images upon images of the way girls and women (and boys and men) are “supposed to” look.…

So I took a mini-sabbatical, a mental check out, if you will. I just reached a point where I couldn't do it. I just couldn't do it. I was frustrated, I was worn out, I was unmotivated. Mostly, I didn't know if I even wanted to continue. So I went to lunch today with a college friend who is a fitness trainer and is in graduate school for health and fitness. If anyone could clarify things for me, it would be her.
And boy, did she clarify things for me.
We spent two hours over lunch discussing my…

Children today drink twice as much soda as they did 20 years ago, averaging as much as 20 ounces a day! A large soda not only provides tons of calories and sugar but it also includes at least 100 mg of caffeine. Many parents wouldn’t dream of giving their kids a cup of coffee yet routinely offer them soda, which contains caffeine as well. We also see many families hitting the local café or Starbucks for a café latte or mocha frappuccino loaded with the burst of ‘energy’ we call caffeine.
The tr…

Congratulations! Your toddler is now old enough to sit in a “big boy” chair. You no longer need to strap him into a high chair. I bet you think dining out will now be much easier! Unfortunately, the difficulties are just beginning. Your toddler will now be able to explore restaurants without restraints. How can you get your child to sit at the table with you instead of wandering around on his own? Read on for some tips.
1. Be consistent. Teach your child that she must sit with you at the dinner…

I have always liked this summary of interventions for kids with ADHD. It is written by the US Department of Education. Often I refer families, especially when they are newly diagnosed, to it 'cause it is concise. Similar to Treatment Guidelines by APA, AAP etc, it addresses behavioral interventions, which I appreciate.
What strikes me is that also like accepted psychiatric and educational guidelines, it doesn't mention nutrition. Why not? We now know from research in diabetes, cancer and heart-…

It seems that everybody is talking about the evils of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). But what is fact and what is simply hearsay? Here we will give all the facts about HFCS.
What, exactly, is HFCS?
High-fructose corn syrup is a common sweetener and preservative. HFCS is made by changing the sugar (glucose) in cornstarch to fructose – another form of sugar. The end product is a combination of fructose and glucose. Because it extends the shelf life of processed foods and is cheaper than sugar,…
