Last month, a colleague approached me about exploring the role of acupuncture in weight loss. As a traditional Western medicine physician, I was skeptical about its merits. While many of my patients have used herbs and other holistic treatments, I have never been a believer. But, since I am willing to do anything to help my patients, I decided to use myself as a guinea pig to see if acupuncture was something I should be recommending.
First, I did some research. I wanted to know the science behi…

Our worst fears have finally come true. Overweight teens are dying from heart disease. Pediatricians have long feared that the rising number of severely obese children and teens would soon start to suffer from adult complications of obesity, like heart attacks, strokes, and death. And now it is happening.
According to the St. Louis County medical examiner, a 13-year old football player who collapsed during football practice died as a direct result of “hypertensive cardiovascular disease”, also…

A new study has found that overweight children, especially girls, show signs of the negative consequences of being overweight as early as kindergarten.

Last week, there was an article in the NY Times about Meme Roth and her fight with her children’s school concerning school birthday parties and cupcakes.
What sets her off is the junk food served on special occasions: the cupcakes that come out for every birthday, the doughnuts her children were once given in gym, the sugary “Fun-Dip” packets that some parent provided the whole class on Valentine’s Day.
“I thought I was sending my kid to P.S. 9, not Chuck E. Cheese,” Ms. Roth, a trim, impassio…

Why should a child’s diet be different from an adult’s diet?
A child’s diet can not be the same as an adult’s diet for many reasons. A child’s body goes through many stages of development and his nutritional needs vary depending on which stage he is in. I recently read a FASCINATING book called "The End of Overeating" by David A. Kessler, MD. I highly recommend it! In the book, Dr. Kessler reviews what makes some people prone to overeating. He outlines the science behind the drive to eat when you are already full. He then goes over how restaurants manipulate us to get us to eat more quickly and thus eat more food.
We are born preferring sweet tastes. Even newborns "smile" when given sugar water! But we are not just drawn to sweetness alone. As…

It's Sunday evening and I am exhausted. We have been running around with the children all day and neither my husband nor I feel like cooking. The kids are too run-down to take them to a restaurant. And most fast food is really unhealthy. I can't decide what to feed the kids for dinner. I even debate playing the "Breakfast For Dinner" game and giving them a bowl of cereal. And then a commercial for KFC's New Grilled Chicken comes on TV. Hmmm... My husband and I both look at each other. Should we?…
