Lynne Kenney Sleep Baby Sleep

Mommy B from North Carolina asks: How can I get my 2.5 year old to sleep? While sleep is a natural part of our daily rhythms, some children (and even adults) can have difficulty: (a) Getting to sleep (b) Falling back to sleep or (c) Staying asleep. Sleep Baby Sleep by thefamilycoachContinue

Rachel Turner Transitioning baby to crib!

I recently transitioned my almost 3 month old from a bassinet in our room to her crib. She hated it and was not getting ANY sleep, and neither was I!!!! :-( A friend recommended this new blanket to me, Snap Cozy, and I love this blanket! It stays on your baby, gives them a feeling of security by gently hugging them and my daughter must love it too because she slept for a 5 hour stretch the first night I used it and it keeps getting better! It also helps babies stay on their backs and has safety… Continue

Kathryn Whiteley How to survive daylight savings time changes with twins

Daylight Savings Time impacts twin babies' schedules

twin baby sleeping As yet another "Daylight Savings Time" change approaches, I am reminded what a nightmare it can be for families with young twins, triplets, or more. My kids were very early risers. No matter what time we put them to bed, they would get up extremely… Continue

Angel Mulhern Taking Charge of My Fertility

Yesterday, I sent a friend a copy of the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler. It began my journey toward motherhood, and I have recommended it to all my friends who are “trying to get pregnant.” If only I had known, taking charge of my fertility would mean losing control of every other aspect of my life. Take my body for example of “lost control.” I look in the mirror before stepping in the shower, allow several moments for the initial shock to wear off, and wonder, “What th… Continue

Lydia R. LeRoy-Williams Signs that I need some kind of RETREAT!

1) I'm angry with love bugs - they get more action than I do lately and they feel the need to do it on me, near me, or around me. Little basards! 2) My daughters naptime is something I secretly hope for every morning when I open my eyes. 3) My husbands breathing pisses me off. 4) Randomly I want to rip off someones face, sometimes they're loved ones, other times strangers, I don't discriminate. 5) I'm forgetful, weepy, pissed, irrational, emotional, and feel as though being in a coma might n… Continue

Amy Webb Moms' Expectations About Infant Sleep: Is There a Connection to Actual Sleep Patterns?

A new study just released in the journal Child Development addresses an interesting issue--do moms' thoughts and expectations (i.e., cognitions) about infant sleep actually influence how well (or not so well) their babies sleep? It's an interesting idea when you think about it. The concept is that parents have certain expectations or preconceived ideas of how their child will behave, whether it be in regards to sleeping or eating, playing, etc. These expectations may actually influence how paren… Continue

Rosana Vollmerhausen A Superhero in Our Midst

I'd heard about such kids. Tall tales of children that, when agitated, used their mutant powers of regurgitated food to silence their enemies. Toddlers with unflinching focus, determination, and sour milk resources. Little ones that leave you in such a state of shock, you were left questioning everything you thought you knew about parenting. I never thought I'd have such a child. Read on... Continue

Rosana Vollmerhausen Vacation Shmacation

So, on my last day at the beach for the holiday weekend and it occurred to me...I'm exhausted. I just went to put my one-year-old down for his afternoon nap and fell into a deep sleep for several minutes while holding him. I was rudely smacked back into consciousness by The Wordless Wonder. "What? Huh? Who?" I sputtered until I realized what had happened. I looked down to see his smiling face and the weapon that shocked me back awake (his hand) still resting firmly on my cheek. Read more on… Continue

Michelle Hutchison Preschooler driving you crazy at bedtime?

Do your children drive you crazy at bedtime? Does it feel like forever before they settle down and go to sleep? About Routines * Families function at their best when there are predictable routines in their day to day lives. For example, if bedtime routine always consists of bath time, putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, stories, then bed, - children will learn that “this is what happens in our family” and will be less likely to resist. * Routines also help children to feel safe and to understa… Continue

Erin Eisenberg Baby Rolls Over and Over and Over...

I was so excited when my baby girl, Maya, figured out how to roll over when she was only three and a half months old. That was a month ago. Now, all she seems to want to do is roll, which can be a problem when she’s in her crib, especially combined with the fact that we’re trying to let her cry in the night so that she can soothe herself back to sleep (which she does quite quickly most of the time). However, last night… Continue

Erin Eisenberg To Cry or Not To Cry...

It seems moms I meet are really split about whether to let their little ones cry themselves to sleep or whether to soothe them to sleep. I confess that I have a very hard time letting my little girl cry, but after much reading, research and discussion, I have come to the conclusion that it’s best to let her cry herself to sleep. It’s not easy and I have to turn the baby monitor volume way down and set a timer for myself so I don’t go and pick her up when she begins to cry. Still, I believe that… Continue

Kerry from Baby Time Baby Bamboozler: Why My 9-Month-Old Doesn't Sleep Through the Night

Preface: this is my fault. Just wanted to put that out there before I start describing the current sleeping arrangement in our house. An average night sees our three-year-old, Jack, in bed by 7:30 p.m. His baby brother, Max, currently nine months old, goes down between 7:30 and 8:30. Max's bedtime varies depending on whether he's had a late nap and, more importantly, whether one of us is willing to hold him for a while. If so, he goes to sleep earlier (but may wake up once placed in his crib u… Continue

ecostilettor Stressed-Out Sleep? Try Mommy's Secret to Successful Snoozing

Stress. It’s killing me. I was never a nail-biter, but by now I’ve nibbled away the dry cuticles and sides of my fingers until I’m practically drawing blood. And sleep—what’s that? I toss and turn while my brain runs through my to-do list like a hamster in a Habitrail. But I’m not alone: According to the National Sleep Foundation, 76% of Americans experience symptoms of sleep disorders on a regular basis, making sleep disorders the most common health problem in the United States. And while the… Continue

Jillian Livingston I ATE MY KIDS

Yesterday after four hours of sleep I woke up ready to kill and eat anybody who crossed my path. Unfortunately for me it had snowed nine inches the night before and Wade was chomping at the bit to plunge into the untracked powder. His plan was to ski in the morning and than hook up with the boys and I at the mountain at lunchtime. He ignored that my hair was larger than usual and that my fangs were extracted. I wanted to scream to him, “Don’t leave me alone with the boys! Can’t you see that it i… Continue

Jeanne Wieland Fixated on sleep? Better get used to it

I didn't even realize it when I was in it, but it turns out I had it pretty great for awhile. For a few blissful years, I rarely thought about sleep. For most of us, it is the birth of our first child that makes us realize just how precious sleep is and exactly what its purpose is. Doctors may tell you stuff about how sleep is important for recharging your batteries, cell growth and yada yada, but we all know the real reason for sleep. We sleep because we don't want to burst into tears at the… Continue
