As we develop social media campaigns for our clients, we often ask them to encourage their employees to support the campaign by sharing it with their friends, adding comments and just generally getting involved.
But sometimes that brings up a hairy question: Do we want our employees on social media saying they work for us? What if Sally's wild night out reflects badly on the company? What if she publicly says something negative about a client on Facebook or Twitter?
So we sometimes help compan…

I've been doing a lot of 2010 planning for my clients for whom we run their social media tools. My team and I have been coming up with some really creative ideas to make social media work for our clients in the coming year.
So I thought this would be a good topic for a blog post: planning for social media. What? Plan, you say? Who plans for Twitter or Facebook? I just write what's on my mind at the moment, right? Well, yes... sometimes. That's perfectly fine for individuals using these tools, b…

Facebook's been in the news a lot lately - working out a deal with Bing to index its public updates, redoing its group feature and now updating the news feed yet again. As is almost always the case when Facebook makes a design change, plenty of people have
rebelled against it. Change is hard! And even I have to admit change comes a little too frequently in the world of Facebook.
So what's different? Well, no longer…

I am continually asked "Should I use a Facebook Page or Group for my business/organization/cause, etc.?" and while I typically recommend Pages, I've always thought Groups had their place especially for issues and causes that a group of people support. But yesterday Facebook shook up their community once again with a major design update for Groups, putting them more on par with Pages.
Benefits of Groups
To me, the major benefit of groups has been twofold: you can send a message directly t…

At a recent panel on which I was a participant, one of my brilliant co-panelists noted the real time Web is where everything is headed (
Heather Solos, that's you :)) and I thought what a mind-blowing, but really true statement that is.
Several things have happened in the last two weeks or so that really demonstrate how right she is.
1) Twitter…

I am so tired of everytime I mention Twitter someone uttering "Why do I care to know what everyone's doing all the time?" Well, you don't and neither do I and that's not what Twitter's about! (just a personal pet peeve :))
While Twitter is wonderful for many reasons like netwo…

I have to say I've never been overly impressed with
LinkedIn, the business social network. It seems like a good idea in theory, but in practice it's never really helped me. On the flip side, though, I haven't made it a top priority like Twitte…

So there's been a lot of talk lately these days about Mommy bloggers and their credibility. Newsweek recently did an article asking:
Are Mommy bloggers corporate sell-outs?
Those of us who read Mommy blogs a lot know how many product reviews and contest giveaways go on every day. Corporate America has discovered the power of moms (finally! :)), especially with regards to social media where a positive review (or a negative on…

Noticed the # sign on Twitter, but not sure what it is? You're not alone. It took me many months to get a good explanation and a full understanding of what the Twitter world calls "hashtags."
For me, hashtags are a way categorize a tweet, almost like giving it a "tag"…

One morning last year while checking my email in the morning, I came across a Google Alert for myself.
Google Alerts are notifications you can set up with Google to email you when a certain phrase or keyword is mentioned online (in this case it was my name). I opened the email and clicked the link to find out I had been quoted in a New York Times blog, unbeknownst to me! Apparently, a tweet I posted a few days before commenting on a ridi…

By now you have probably read about how powerful social media has been in connecting people in Iran protesting the recent election results. It is absolutely incredible to watch how these tools have changed the way the world operates in the face of an event like those that are happening in Iran.
Twitter
Twitter has been a powerful means to connect people to the cause in Iran. Notice the green photos of your friends on Twitter? That's in support of the protesters who have taken on g…

So now that you've got Google Analytics down pat, let's head over to our friends at Facebook. If you run a "page" on Facebook, hopefully you've encountered their version of analytics called "Insights". If not, go to your page, click "Edit Page" top left. Insights is on the top toward the right-hand side. Click "All page insights" and you're ready to get rolling.
Facebook recently added to all the amazing information you can now learn about your page. When you view insights, it shows you several…

Last week, there was a fairly quiet reporting of some comments made by a Twitter exec that were phenomenally powerful if you listened carefully. So I'm here to give you the heads up if you missed it.
As reported by
TechCrunch, Twitter is getting into the game of search, but not to compete against Google. Twitter is a great place to find out what people are saying about a given topic RIGHT NOW.…

Remember the days when it was novel to have a Web site? Then when if you didn't have a Web site, you just weren't serious about business? Well, now we've entered phase 3 where presence on social media is becoming essential, as well, and Web sites? Well, take 'em or leave 'em.
I asked the title question after seeing two big companies recently drop their Web site from certain advertising and replace it with their Facebook page and/or Twitter handle. The first, VitaminWater, floored me as I was wa…

Recently Australian actor Hugh Jackman reiterated one of the biggest lessons in using social media online: don't lie!!
So many people have gotten burned on this one that I can't believe he did it too. Wal-mart had its PR firm blogging about how wonderful they were without disclosing they were the PR firm, as one example from a few years ago.
What did Mr. Jackman do? Well, he posted a tweet that suspiciously did not seem like something he would say. He misspelled and used the wrong name for the…

So a couple of posts ago, I offered tips on getting ideas when you're suffering from "blogger's block." The
post ignited a great discussion of more idea starters and one person noted that now they need stuff to Twitter about. I thought that would make a great discussion all on its own, so here we are!
Before we hit my list of ideas to get you started Twittering when you don't know what to say, let me just note one th…

When it comes to Facebook, I am often asked: Should I start a group, a page or a profile? Well, it depends on your goals. Here are my thoughts on the purpose of each:
Profile - A profile is intended for people only. So if you are a business or an organization, do not set up a profile. In the old days, we had to do that before they added Business Pages, but now that is not cool with Facebook. In fact, if you post a business as a profile and they find it, you run the risk of them taking it…

It happens to the best of us. We know we need to write a blog post. It's been over a week. And though somehow topics for blog posts seem to run rampant in our heads during the most inopportune times (changing diapers, in the shower, during a game of catch), when we sit down to write, somehow they've all disappeared. It's called Blogger's Block. :)
If this happens to you, I've got a few idea starters to get you going on a blog post ... at least until the next one rolls around.
1) Offer your tak…

So TwitterMoms, have you participated in a Twitter "party" yet? Like the
TwitterMoms wine tasting? Or a launch party for a new business or campaign? If you don't know what it is, let me give you a quick primer.
During a Twitter "party," which happens online via Twitter (not in the real world, as some people think :)), participants use a specific word to flag their posts, or “tweets,” allowing others to follow all posts t…
