Get thee some Purell

I'm worried about H1N1, but I'm more worried that fear will cause us to stop our lives AND teach our kids to be afraid. Read my blog about it here. www.mom2momkc.com Continue

I'm the mom soccer moms love to hate

I support my kids in their sporting endeavors by getting them to practice and coming for the games. But I don't stay for practice and won't rearrange the family schedule so my 12-year-old can play 25 basketball games between November and February. Is that unreasonable? read about it here.Continue

If my kid drops an F-bomb, does that mean I'm a bad mommy?

I hate when that happens! Read all about it here. www.mom2momkc.com Continue

Guiding Light got snuffed. Was it my fault?

"Guiding Light," the longest-running soap opera in TV history at 72 years old, signs off forever on Friday. I wax nostalgic: http://www.mom2momkc.com/?a=profile&u=67&t=blog&blog_id=2588 Continue

The World's Going to the dogs...but if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

You can find this blog and others like it at www.mom2momkc.com. Here’s a fun game to play when you’re stuck in line with your kiddos at the DMV or waiting for a delayed flight and your 6-year-old’s on meltdown or you’re driving across Kansas and your 13-year-old’s sarcasm level is about to make your head explode: Imagine what breed every member of the family would be if you were all… Continue

10 Ways to Torment Your Teen

I always thought I was a fairly cool mom, one you wouldn’t be embarrassed to take with you to the mall or Back to School Night. I’m no prude. I don’t wear “mom” jeans. I’ve allowed my older kids to have birthday sleepovers every year since they were 7. I’m edgy. I’m… Continue

Go away, you mommy-bashers

You can find this blog and others like it www.mom2momkc.com. If you heard a loud noise early Tuesday morning – sort of like a primal scream – it was me. That was my reaction to the latest salvo in the grossly overwrought and completely fabricated Mommy Wars. Enough already, you writers who are merely trying to justify your own decisions. Quit trying to start a seventh-grade-style fight. And butt the heck out of my business. What set me off was this: Dr.… Continue

Mom2Mom: What will you do to help prevent child abuse?

You can find this blogs and others at www.mom2momkc.com. Today begins National Child Abuse Prevention Month. And it reminds me of a story. When my older son was in third grade, I dropped by his school one day for lunch. He asked a couple friends to join us, and we went into the hallway outside the cafeteria, an area affectionately called The Café. The boys were joking around, laughing at the stuff 8- and 9… Continue

Mom2Mom: In real life, Barbie turned 50 and lost the dream house to foreclosure

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. In light of the present dismal economy and fragile world we live in, I question the wisdom of Mattel Inc. making such a big whoop-de-doo about Barbie on her birthday. She hit the big 5-0 on Monday and got a facelift. And a tattoo. And let’s face it, she got a boob job and probably lipo, too. Puh-leeze. There’s no way she could be 50 and still fit into that same b… Continue

Not to stress you out or anything, but you are your child's first teacher

You can also read this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. http://www.mom2momkc.com/?a=profile&u=67&t=blog&blog_id=1952#comments You know how I’m fond of saying kids don’t come with an instruction manual? Still true. But they do come with a helpline. It’s called Parents as Teachers. And in Missouri, every parent has full and free access to the program, which sends trained and certified parent ed… Continue

Mom2Mom: Michael Phelps, we hardly knew ye

But man, did we ever think we did. Remember the orgasmic coverage of his quest to win eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, a feat he accomplished? Remember how he broke seven world records and was dubbed by sportscasters and other talking heads the “greatest athlete of all time?” Remember all those stories about his underage boozing? Oops, no. We don’t remember those because we didn’t hear much about those “youthful indiscretions.” So news that broke last week of Phelps toking up at a S… Continue

Mom2Mom: Everything I know about parenting I learned from Arthur

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. I had an epiphany the other day. I realized I don’t have to have a sick kid around to watch Arthur on PBS. It’s OK if I watch it by myself – although it makes for better discussion points if at least one of my offspring watches it with me. See, as I’ve said before, my husband and I didn’t really think through our decision to have kids. I mean, yeah, we discussed i… Continue

Mom2Mom: Here's a bunch of stuff they never tell you...

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. I pretty much stumbled into having kids and waltzed through my first pregnancy with very little thought to the work that lay ahead. Only during the last few weeks, when I took Lamaze, did I wonder, “Was this really a good idea?” And then afterward, I decided it was, although there were so many things no one told me. Or maybe they did and I didn’t listen. Like aft… Continue

Mom2Mom: What's your worst nightmare?

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. I had a panic attack yesterday. It was long overdue and in fact had been building since the day in 2002 that we welcomed our youngest child, Tom, into the family. I remember so clearly holding his little 6-pound, 2-ounce body, feeling complete, feeling unbelievably happy. The euphoria lasted about a day. And then the dread set in, and it’s been there in the back… Continue

Mom2Mom: My fantasy Christmas letter

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. We haven’t quite mailed all our Christmas cards yet. So if you’re someone I usually send a card to and you haven’t yet received one from the Beems, don’t despair. It’s on its way. Frankly, I don’t think we got as many cards this year. And I know we didn’t get as many Christmas letters – you know, those sometimes-braggy, generally lengthy rites of the season that… Continue

Mom2mom: Extreme Parenting -- Stomach Flu

You can find this blog at www.mom2momkc.com. This economy stinks, yes. And my chosen career field is imploding, true. But I’m not too worried because my kids and I dreamed up a new reality show early Tuesday morning: Extreme Parenting: Stomach Flu. OK, here’s how it works: You start out with one parent, probably a mom. She’s got to have at least two kids, and she’s at home alone with them. Maybe she’s a si… Continue
