Catching Butterflies and Lessons in Love

Yesterday my little girl went butterfly catching. She went with a neighbor, her son and of course my son. They went around the corner to the park where there has been a ton of butterflies due to migrating habits lately. When they returned my daughter was so proud that she had caught one. There was this precious little butterfly in a little butterfly habitat with a few leaves and some flowers. She proudly showed it to everyone she could and we placed it on top of the bookshelf to keep it out of… Continue

IOWA'S STAND FOR GENDER EQUALITY

It looks like if you’re a woman who wants to break into politics, Iowa might just be the place to start. Last Wednesday, Iowa made a bold stand against gender bias by requiring "gender equality" on all local boards and commissions appointed by city councils, school boards and county boards of supervisors. The Iowa House passed the bill in a 71 to 27 vote. If the bill becomes law, "gender equity" will be required on all local boards and commissions starting January 1, 2012. Women make up 51% of… Continue

A Single Woman

There are so many women that deserve recognition during Women’s History Month (as well as the rest of the year), but Jeanette Rankin’s place in that history is pivotal. Jeanette Pickering Rankin was the first woman elected to the United States House of Representatives and the first female member of the Congress. She was known as the Lady of the House. Rankin was a pacifist. She voted against both WWI and WWII, the only person to do the latter.… Continue

Life Moves Pretty Fast

(As posted on my bog, Meg's Idle Chatter) It seems so strange to sit and watch home videos of my little guy when he was just a baby. When I think back on what my life was like and what it's like now. How does 5 years just happen so fast? I think the day-to-day life is just so damn busy that we totally let time just slip through our fingers. Do you ever have those "once in a lifetime moments"? You know the song from Crowded House? Those moments when… Continue

The Dentist & Flu Shots

The Dentist All weekend I have had a small knot in the pit of my stomach, and though I tried to deny it, the big bold writing on my ical would not let me forget it. Today was Dentist Appt. day! Not for me, but for the kids. Patrick has been a trooper at every dentist appointment he's ever been to, while Cheyanne on the other hand, well Cheyanne not so much. Last year she cried and threw such an incredible fearful fit, that they ended up not giving her an e… Continue

My First Parent Teacher Conference & The Defeat of Separation Anxiety

Now I know my son is a good kid and a pretty smart cookie. But as this conference inched closer and closer I couldn't help but wonder if I was wrong. What if at school, he is a big stinker? You always wonder what your child is like when you're not around. And since I've not really been able to volunteer in his class or get a chance to get to know the teacher, I haven't really had any indication of how he's doing. Other than my own observations from home. Plus, I was almost kept back in Kinderga… Continue

Teaching Diversity

Last night in one of my early childhood development classes the topic was teaching an anti-bias curriciculum. A topic I am quite passionate about. We discussed the ways to help educate children on differences and how it’s important to teach them at a young age that different is ok, but racism is not. It's important us to be very aware of our own prejudices and ideas and make a conscious effort to make sure those things don’t translate down to our children. There was a story shared in the class… Continue

Where Babies Come From

My husband is out playing a gig tonight so it's just me and the kiddos. We were enjoying a lazy Saturday dinner of hot dogs & baked beans, when my 5-year-old asks, "How do babies get into the tummy?" I kind of hesitated and told him that babies live in the tummy while they grow and then when they're ready they come out. Annoyed, he told me "I know that. But how do they get into the tummy?" Of course than my three-year-old chimes in and starts asking too. Is it just me, or is five kind of yo… Continue

A Sweet Memory

I remember how tired I was when I was pregnant with Patrick, and how happy I was to go on to Maternity leave. He was two weeks late, so those weeks after I stopped working just dragged on. I, of course, got in the habit of watching reruns of shows I had never seen before. Late at night when I couldn't sleep I would tip toe into the living room and watch reruns, and then spend the winter mornings curled up in bed after my husband went to work and do the same thing. One show I grew to love during… Continue

Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This...

After last weeks big bang up, my poor little guy now has a fever. It's a little one, but it's a fever. Of course he has to get it on the LAST day of a four-day weekend. At least he seems in good spirits, and other than some flushed cheeks, and a smaller appetite, he's actually been acting pretty normal. It's those fevers that have them lying on the couch with no energy that really kill me! I'm guessing that he won't be going back to school tomorrow. One more lazy day. Could be worse. I can feel… Continue

The Scrapes & Bangs of Kindergarten

You know, once your child is in Kindergarten for awhile (we're going on close to four months now) you get into a groove. Though you never fully get used to the whole "growing up" thing, you do kind of get used to the grade school life. He's going out on play dates, going to birthday parties without you, and just building a whole little world that doesn't really include you. And you let it happen. Because that's just the law of nature. And then one day the phone rings. "Your son was hurt at scho… Continue
