Crafts for Teacher

I am completely overwhelmed by my end-of-the-school-year gift crafting, which is slightly derailed by my upcoming trip to International Quilt Market in Pittsburgh. But I couldn't let another week pass without bringing up the topic of teacher gifts.
It's been a long time since I've had to do teacher gifts -- I gave them up as each boy moved into middle school and six teachers -- but my daughter's gotten me back in the swing of thing. Sure, I could do a Starbucks gift card or a cutesy mug but Id rather make something really cool.

Last year, I made cool paper flowers, which were a huge hit (it didn't hurt that DD's teacher was a scrapper). This year, I embellished each child's thumbprint on ceramic vases. Sure it took a little work -- and meant handing off my own child at our class picnic to paint -- but I think they turned out pretty cute.

I found a lot of great ideas -- including the inspiration for this year's gift -- on Flickr, including a couple of really cool quilts I'd like to try at some point. What kind of crafty teacher gifts do you or will you be making this year?

Comment by Robin on May 18, 2009 at 12:28pm: I've often done a "catch up on the movies you've missed because you were so busy teaching" basket: big bowl, some popcorn, and gift card to video rental place. Now that via-the-mail rental is more popular than in-store rental, I'm going to have to come up with something new.

This will include a free registration and free sit fee! I've done it in the past with much success! If it is a group class gift we put together a date basket together, ie....movie bight, spa day, etc

Roz, I'm all about sticking with what works. Is your granola recipe on your site? Must be very yummy to be in such high demand!

I will use the venti sized clear cup that they use for their Fraps and cold drinks and in the bottom, I will put a brown/beige washcloth to look like coffee (probably put some bath bombs wrapped into it) and then top it off with a white bath poof as the whipped cream. I will fill the green straw with bubble bath and hot glue the ends so it stays put and then to use it all she'll have to do is clip off the end. I'll probably give a gift card with it though ;)
