Recently, I've been writing posts about free things to enjoy this summer. Today I am writing about things we have enjoyed with Seth that are small, subtle most of them around the house, yet fun at the same time. Most are free too. So this summer let your hair down, and let the inner child come to life. I promise this will leave the kids, and you with smiling faces and great memories.
Have cousins or close friends over for a few days. They'll be the best cure for your kids boredom; even if you don't have much planned, the kids will entertain each other. Thanks to Lauren for staying over for a week, and thanks to Logan, and Lily for spending a fun day with Seth.
Finger Paint/painting. Get big pieces of paper and let them go all out finger-painting!
Lay down in your back yard/patio/deck on a clear summer night and and stare at the sky and talk about stars and planets. If you know any tell your kids about different constellations.
Play in the water fountain/sprinkler.
Have a day in the kitchen. Make pancakes/waffles or bake goodies together.
Once a month, Seth and I go around picking up toys he doesn't want/need and collect goods from the pantry and we drop them off at the Goodwill or the nearest Food Bank. Seth does have an understanding, as he puts it, "for kids who have no toys or food".
Go tubing or ride a four wheeler together; something you wouldn't normally do.
Tell them stories of when they were babies or while you were pregnant with them.
Plant some trees or flowers.
Go Blueberyy picking.
Skype. Skype is a free service to video chat with friends or family all over the world. Seth loves to Skype his grandparents in Nepal, and family in New York, and other parts of the world.
Have them make some art work or write a note if they are old enough. Put it in an envelope, stamp it and take it to the post office to mail it to family or friends.
Have an ice cream night after a light dinner. Kids love ice cream!! You can hang out at the ice cream parlor.
Go the closest open Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning and let your kids pick some fresh fruits and vegetables.
If your kid doesn't already have a bank account, let him/her take their piggy bank, allowance or savings and go open a bank account. The earlier we start them on money lessons the better.
Tap dance on bubble wrap.
Get some neighborhood kids together and have a wagon pulling contest (supervised).
Draw with chalk; make "Welcome home" or "I Love You" signs.
Goto a picnic by a river, waterfall, creek or lake. Try and skip rocks across the surface of the water. Assuming kids know this is to only be done at the open water.
Have all the kids in the neighborhood bring their bubble machines and have a "bubblicious" party.
Halloween in July. Get out your old clothes and let you kids dress up in them.
Music to the ears. Get out spoons, pots and pans and compose a piece. Put on a show.
Get out some old socks and a few markers and make faces on your socks. You can put on a puppet show for family and friends.
Collect your plastic bags and bottles and drop them off at your local grocery store to be recycled.
Take them to a flea market and show them that one man's junk can be another man's treasure.
Watch your wedding video or their baby videos together.
For little girls paint each others nails and for boys scultp each others hair.
If you have an inexpensive or a kiddy camera let them take pictures and videos of their fun!
Think outside the box. Make a playhouse box out of cardboard, and have fun in it!
Get your child to write a note to their mom with dad's help or dad with mom's help. Fold and wrap the note in wrapping paper and tie a bow around it. Make a note on the outside thats says, "This gift isn't to be opened Now. Open and read it when you miss me". This will be something real special.
Have you tried any of these? What are some fun things you've enjoyed with your kids?
