So, I just joined this group recently and thought I should tell you a little about me. Yes, I am a mom, but I am an empty- nester mom. I have two sons, both of them grown and married. I love my daughters in law. they're funny, loving, smart and hard working. I don't get to spend nearly as much time with them as I would like to.
I don't have any grand kids and don't know if there will be any in my future. Either way, I'm OK with it. If my sons and daughters in law do choose to become parents, I know where to send them to find useful information on the many decisions they will have to make. Right here will be a good start.
I have worked in the nonprofit sector for well over 20 years now and do to the current economy have found my self unemployed. It is unfortunate that at the very time when nonprofits are being asked to serve even more people in need, donations to those agencies take a nose dive.
My interests have been focused on housing, homelessness, mental health, addiction and hunger. These are issues close to my heart and have been rewarding far beyond anything I could have imagined. I enjoy searching the web for programs that support these issues in new and creative ways. It's the thing that ignites my spirit, feeds my energy and gives me hope.
Lately, I have become a student of social media and how the use of social media can assist nonprofits in reaching a larger crowd of potential donors, supporters and volunteers. I can also see the use of social media in educating others and reducing the stigma that certain conditions such as mental illness or addiction create.
Finally, I love animals. I have a house full (probably my answer to my empty nest) and look to also connecting with other pet owners that find joy in their furred and feathered "kids."
Thank you all for the kind welcome! I look forward to tweeting, blogging and hopefully in some cases, meeting you!
