We race around with a frenzy this time of year. The to-dos on our list is endless, and as women and Moms we never seem to feel a sense of completion. Noone is saying to us, Wow what a good job you did, shopping and decorating, and baking, and whipping the house into shape. It becomes expected in an odd sort of way. We have set the bar so high not to compete with anyone, but just because maybe we can, and it gives us something; for a day, or a week, or a month. I tried to explain to a young man recently what all this Christmas frenzy was all about, and why it was so important. When I explained the tradition out loud, we both laughed. It did sound ridiculous. All of the cards, and worrying about sending everyone on our list, and not offending anyone by possibly forgetting them.
I am taking a look at what is really important, and I am starting to think that some of it can go. Next year I promise to do less, stay with my intention for a simpler, less costly celebration, and gift giving.
