Motrin Moms Controversy

Since we are TwitterMoms, I thought I'd see some discussions zooming around about the Motrin controversy this week-end. If you were "off the grid" let me bring you up to date.

Motrin's ad about babywearing ticked off a lot of moms. After you've watched the video, judge for yourself if the fury was deserved. Evidently the YouTube video of the ad was passed around Twitter and many moms became incensed. Someone finally put together all the "Tweets" and made a video that they passed on to Motrin. That was done at about 2:00 am on Sunday. By Sunday evening at 9, the ad was pulled.

Whether you agree with actions on either side or not, you have to respect the power of Social Media (Twitter in particular) AND the moms who got into action. What do you think?

Comment by Rugbymom on December 19, 2008 at 1:21pm: The add could have been better, but I didn't see what the big deal was. I have more important things to do than get ourtraged as something so mild. I am outraged when a bus drives by with a billboard sign with blood-ravaged photo of an aborted fetus on it by a so called Christian organization (I am a christian and I found this appalling.) If my child saw that bus going down the road I would not even begin to know how to explain that atrocity. That is an ad worth getting pissed about...this one, is not. yeah maybe it was insensitive...but to raise enough stink for them to take it down, i just don't see that.

How could they possibly think that alienating moms everywhere would make us want to rip our children out of their carrier and run to the store to get some motrin? HELLO! All I can say is that I am really loving my BC powders! I almost feel sorry for the ad/marketing team that came up with this winner....almost.

I have worn my babies and yes I have suffered from a little pain but it IS worth it when you look down at your baby and see that smile - you just know that THEY know they are loved. The ad is what it is...an ad. Unfortunately it could have deterred new moms (who don't know any better) from "wearing" their babies and I'm glad it was pulled.

Comment by HIRH on December 2, 2008 at 3:34pm: Have a sense of humor. If you're not a little "crazed" as a mom of a newborn... then apparently you have a nanny. Sleep deprivation alone is a torture tactic. While I agree that baby wearing may contribute to muscle pain, I found that carrying my child around without the carrier was even more of a pain (we tried a regular sling, traditional carrier and ended up with a MaiTai carrier (LOVE)). There are too many REAL problems in the world to create a mob against a Motrin ad.
