“Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints. There is no want to those who fear Him.” Psalm 34:9

I was in conversation with someone a while ago who asked me if my church and my belief was to “fear the Lord.” Upon speaking with her more I came to understand that her interpretation was to truly fear God – meaning to be afraid of Him. Afraid that if she messed up God was there waiting to take action against her. This is a truly wrong interpretation of our Heavenly Father. Others talk about fearing the Lord and think about having a deep respect, but that is not what the fear of the Lord is about. The word “fear” in Psalm 34:9 translated means “reverence.” Reverence goes much deeper than respect. To reverence the Lord means we are to be in awe of Him. We must choose on the inside to reverence God. And so we can read this passage of scripture as “Oh choose to have a reverence for God, you saints” (that is you and I). Now look at the promise we have if we choose to reverence God – “There is no want to those who choose to have reverence (fear) for Him!” I love that! It promises us when we fear the Lord, when we reverence God -there is no want. Now for some more good news – the word “want” there means no lack! We are promised NO LACK!

This world today is in lack. We are reminded of it every day by the media. Even television sitcoms refer to lack (which by the way infuriates me!) There are many different areas people in this world lack. They lack money, health, peace, and even victory. But the Word says they who fear the Lord – they who reverence the Lord – they who are in awe of the Lord, there is no lack for them! It doesn’t matter who you are, if you are a child of the Most High King, if you reverence and are in awe of God – you will not be in lack!

Fear is a word we all are taught that is a negative word. But remember fear is translated reverence in this passage. So why should we fear the Lord? When we fear God we come to a place where we do not lack any good thing; if it is a good thing – we will have it. We must get it settled here and now it IS the will of God for you and I to lack no good thing in our lives! James 1:7 tells us “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” If it is a good thing – God wants us to have it, the only qualifier is we are to reverence Him. If we reverence Him then He is going to bless us. It is settled!

The fear of the Lord will cause you and I to lack no good thing in our lives!
