What Makes Your Work at Home Days Run Smoothly?

I was recently asked "how do you do it" working full time from home and raising a 3 year old?

I dunno lol ~ I just do. I started thinking about the things I do that keep my days running smoothly and was wondering what all YOU do to keep your days running smoothly as a work at home mom?

I think the biggest lesson I've learned recently was not to start working as soon as I wake up (which I did for a LONG time lol). Now I hang out with Hanna for a couple hours in the morning and don't start work until 9am. It completely changed her whole attitude throughout the day, which makes my day much easier.

I'd love to hear what you do to keep your days and your life running smoothly as a work at home mom ~ please feel free to comment below.

Angela,

Thanks for the great tips! I must say I'm a work in the PJs kind of person :) In #3 I'm wondering if you meant don't work through lunch?? Freudian slip?? It is a great tip and one I'm terrible about too ~ I do try to stop and eat with Hanna but some days ~ when I'm on a roll lol ~ .

Thanks again for sharing!

Working from home is tough as it is, and throwing kids into the mix makes it extremely tougher. But somehow, we manage to get things done. Some tips I've learned:

1. Dress like you're going into the office. While "working in my pjs" is alluring, I perform better and take my work more seriously if I'm dressed nicely. Not necessarily a suit, but at the very least nice jeans and a nice shirt. It just helps.

2. Schedule at least one day a week where you take the kids somewhere "fun" during the day, even if it's just for an hour or so. It gives you all a break and gives them something to look forward to each week.

3. Try not to eat through lunch. Take a break (I admit I'm HORRIBLE at this) and better yet, eat lunch with your kids.

4. Do your best to set a strong schedule and stick to it. For instance, I do certain work between 7 and 9, other work between 9 and 2 and I try to take the 11 am hour to return phone calls, schedule appointments, etc. I work better under pressure of deadlines and firm schedules.

5. Find what works for you. Just because it works for me doesn't mean it's ideal for you. Maybe you're better suited to wear your pjs while you work or spontaneity is what drives you. Just try and few things and see what works for you!
